The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Sat 18 September 2016 - The Gambler - Taupo
This is a 4 hr multi lap race, with a BIG difference! You have 4 different tracks, each track with a different points allocation, and you choose which tracks you ride, when and how often. You accumulate points by completing laps and try to gain maximum points during the 4 hrs race time - thus the Gamble! They are using their local pumice based Taupo Trails at Craters MTB Park, situatied just North of Taupo Township. Are you up for The Gamble? NZ's biggest MTB event with over 3000 riders. Open to solo or teams. More info at www.eventpromotions.co.nz

Sat 8 October 2016 - Motu 160 Cycle Challenge - Opotiki
A MTB and Road race that you can do as a solo or in a team. The 65km MTB leg on winding hilly forested gravel road is raced with the Motu Challenge multisport competitors and is followed by a road bike leg of 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka Gorge to Opotiki. www.motuchallenge.co.nz

Sun 23 October 2016 (Labour w/end) - Cheviot Hills Challenge - Cheviot
A multi-lap format race held within the Cheviot Hills Reserve, 1.5 hours drive North of Christchurch. Choices range from one 7km lap for team riders through to 4 laps for expert class riders. Course is a mix of singletrack, 4WD farm track and grass berm. Great chance to test the end of season form. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. Sun 23 October 2016 (Labour w/end) - Deans Bank 10 hour - Wanaka
A popular event that has had great rider feedback. The event is held on the purpose built 11km track situated on DOC land alongside the Clutha River at Deans Bank in Wanaka. The track is all singletrack and has been designed for bikers by bikers so it’s fun to ride! The track has been designed to suit riders of all abilities. Team categories or solo. Sun 23 October 2016 (Labour w/end) - Milk and Honey Race - Takaka, Golden Bay
One race, two bikes, one big hill. The Milk and Honey Race combines one of New Zealand’s biggest road climbs and longest stretches of downhill singletrack into one event. Join the Takaka Hill and the Rameka Track together, start and finish in Takaka, Golden Bay and you have an iconic road and mountainbike race that tests all-round riding skills. Roadies can team up with a mountain biker or you can go it alone with two different bikes. Sun 30 October 2016 - Women and Children Only Short Track event - Siberia Track, Port Hills
As a lead up to our club short track series, we are holding a one-off low-key event for women and children only. The format will be the same as we use in the normal short track events but without the blokes! We are also opening this one up to anyone, not just club members. Note that the course is hilly so all riders need to be competent with hills and singletrack, although the singletrack we use is pretty easy. These are all about fun! Sat 5 November 2016 - Timaru 10 Hour Day/Night MTB Race - Centennial Park, Timaru
A team relay event riding laps over a 10 hour period. 10 Hour Race starts at 9am and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. Also a 2-person 10 hour category. 6 Hour race starts at 1pm and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. Fantastic singletrack course that is fast and challenging with loads of ups and downs but no big hills so ideal for both teams and solo. 10 hour teams of up to 5 riders or solo 10 Hour. In 2016 we are moving this series to mid-week evenings to see how it goes as some riders say Sunday afternoons interfeare with bigger weekend rides. Keen to get your feedback on how it suits you. The Christchurch Singletrack Club are running a series of short track races for CSC club members. Run in the same format as the last few years. Three races each day to cater for the most casual to most serious riders. Kids are very welcome to join in but note that the course is hilly so all riders need to be competent with hills and singletrack, although the singletrack we use is pretty easy. Sat 12 - Sun 13 November 2016 - The Highland Fling - Bundanoon, Southern Highlands, NSW,
A MTB marathon starting and finishing in the village of Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia. Open to solo or teams. An event for all, with four courses: 14, 55, 110 and 160km offering scenic and challenging routes through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop. A 75km point-to-point adventure ride from Garston to Bannockburn via the Nevis Road. The course is around 75km long and includes two big hills (climbing 800m and 640m) and some 25 or more fords. More details available at http://www.cromwell.org.nz

Sun 27 November 2016 - The Longbeach MTB Coastal Challenge - Hinds
A course with stream crossings, strenuous gullies and farm tracks along the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean. There are four courses:
- the 35Km Classic Track for the competitive rider
- the 23km Recreational Track for those who may be new to mountain biking or who just want to enjoy the ride without the pressure of racing
- the 23km Team Track for highly competitive teams
- The 12km Family Track

The Christchurch Singletrack Club are again running a series of short cross country races on 3 mid-week evenings during November and December for CSC club members. Short course multi-lap format using the C2-Crocodile-Deviation-Lower Deviation loop (approx 2.2 km, taking 6-12 minutes). Fri 30 December 2016 - Bannockburn MTB Classic - Bannockburn
A very popular event over the holiday period that takes you into the hills of Bannockburn (just down the road from Queenstown). Three courses to choose from:
Classic ride - 35km of gravel roads and undulating 4WD tracks with a climb of about 600m. Ride time of 1hr 30min - 3hrs
Sport ride - 22km of gravel roads and 4WD tracks with a climb of 350m. Ride time of 45min - 1hr 45min

Sun 5 - Sat 11 Feb 2017 - The Pioneer 7 Day Epic - Christchurch to Queenstown and
The Pioneer is an awe-inspiring seven day MTB teams stage race through NZ’s pristine Southern Alps. The first race of its kind to link together over 500 km of farm tracks, NZ Cycle Trails, double track and singletrack riding in a very special part of the world where soaring mountain peaks, crystal-clear blue lakes, and golden high country await. There is also a 4-day solo option for those who do not want to tackle the full event. Although a shortened version, the 4-day "Traverse" will still prove to be mentally and physically demanding with 8,718m of climbing across the 314km of riding. A 40km ride from Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner) by a route never done before this event. Ride through the history of the West Coast and the Gold Trails that both our ancestors and many Chinese walked, in the search for their riches of the Gold of the West Coast. Sat 11 February 2017 - Coppermine Epic - Nelson
10th Year Anniversary Event in 2017. Don't miss this one! Simply awesome. Mountainbike courses don't come better than this. The main race features 40km of Nelson’s epic mountain bike trails incorporating a loop of the stunning mineral belt. The loop starts in central Nelson and joins the historic Dun Mountain Rail Trail, a flowing gently inclined singletrack leading to a climb up the Classic to almost 900m to the top of Fringe Hill. Followed by the undulating Black Diamond Ridge single track through spectacular native bush. After rejoining the rail trail to complete the loop of the mineral belt with an 850m descent of the new challenge in descending; “Boulder valley”. There is also an easier option (but same distance) that avoids both the grunt up to the summit of Fringe Hill and Black Diamond Ridge. Entry numbers are restricted. 45 minutes from Christchurch, 981 Dalethorpe Rd, Sheffield. The opportunity to ride over some of the great country the Sheffield community has to offer, riding over three privately owned farms. This is a 25km race for the young and the young at heart! Riding through paddocks, 4WD tracks, and weaving through tussock country. There are a couple of steep short climbs, rewarded by fantastic views of the Canterbury plains and balanced with invigorating descents! Sat 25 February 2017 - Ruapehu Express - Central Plateau
A classic 55km XC point to point race/ride mostly across private land with exclusive access for this event only! Riders start on the Tukino Ski field Road and will be treated to a huge variety of terrain and trails including leg 1: NZ Army tussock/desert landscape LAV tracks, leg 2: the myriad of trails in the Karioi pine forest which wraps around the Whangaehu and Wahianoa Rivers, leg 3: the beautiful native Rangataua forest, leg 4: a smattering of farm land and quick dash to Ohakune on the tar sealed roads. There is also a shorter 21km course for those wanting a shorter challenge. Riders start mid way though the Karioi forest, then wind their way through the Rangataua native forest ending with a glide down to the finish line at Ohakune. www.ruapehuexpress.co.nz

A new series of events for secondary school students being held after school on 5 Wednesday afternoons during March 2017 before the school's road season kicks of in April. Sat 4 March 2017 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first few kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm track climbing gradually over undulating terrain with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. New dates - Sat 11 and Sun 12 March 2017 - Port Hills Classic Weekend, Halswell Quarry, Christchurch
The Port Hills Classic was first organised 30 years ago and is thought to be the second proper MTB event in NZ. To celebrate, we are looking at having a weekend of events on the Port Hills. One of these will be the annual Port Hills Classic event - this uses all of the great singletrack on the van Asch property, as well as tracks normally unavailable to the public. Starts and finish at Halswell Quarry. More details closer to the time but there will be events for the whole family and several disciplines (some will be organised by other clubs). Sat 18 March 2017 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is an awesome course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. In 2015 the course was around 6.5km long. With a team of mates, work colleagues, school friends, or even the family, here is an event that is manageable by all. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of double track and singletrack riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems, based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Choose either a 30 or 50km course that traverses the stunning volcanic Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands just off Auckland's east coast. Your entry includes a ferry trip out there and back from Auckland. All the details are at www.thedual.co.nz

Sat 1 April 2017 - Naseby 12 Hour Challenge - Naseby
Now in it's 11th year. Start/finish area is at the Larchview Campground, Naseby. 9am till 9pm. Entry normally about $75 per person (solo or team). The normal 10 (ish) km course includes heaps of sweet singletrack and some forestry roads. More details available at www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz. There are limited entries due to tent site spaces, so best be quick! Entries open 9pm on 1 Feb and all 750+ spots fill up within a few minutes! Sat 22 April 2017 - Contact Epic - Lake Hawea
One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. A once a year opportunity to race the full 125km circumference of Lake Hawea, near Wanaka (also 95km and 35km options). If you are ready to raise the bar then this event is for you. Whether you want to race hard or just take on the challenge and adventure of completing this event, you won’t be disappointed. Sat 20 & Sun 21 May 2017 – “Weekender” - Blenheim
Saturday is the “Eliminator” at the Mountain Bike Park, Taylor Pass Road. Short course and great warm-up for Sunday. Sunday will be a race/ride on “Dumgree”, a hill country property behind Blenheim. Four courses approx. 10, 20, 30 and 40km with a mix of easier and harder topography. Organised by the Marlborough MTB Club. Sat 27 May 2017 - Mt Isobel Challenge - Hanmer
A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain.
