The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Thu 4 Feb - Sat 6 Feb 2016 - The Pioneer 3 Day Traverse - Lake Ohau to Queenstown
The 3 Day Traverse takes everything that is great about The Pioneer and concentrates it down to 3-days of intense but achievable stage-racing. Linking together 219 km of farm tracks, NZ Cycle Trails, double track and single track riding (the very same trails as the 7 Day Epic) it will take you through the best the Southern Alps has to offer and to parts of the country that few will ever get to enjoy. Sat 6 February 2016 - The Pioneer Race Queenstown Day Ride - Queenstown
This is your chance to ride the final day of the Pioneer seven day MTB stage race! Open to anyone to enter, the Queenstown day ride is the final day of the Pioneer stage race from Snow Farm to Queenstown. The first half of the ride is challenging riding with 2000 m of ascent and some good climbs to reach stunning views, then you will tackle a 12 km descent into Arrowtown before riding the Queenstown Trails network to the finish line. Sun 7 February 2016 - Kaiwara Classic - Culverden
43km of adventure mountainbiking from Culverden to Cheviot via the Lowry Peaks Range, Kaiwara Saddle, Ethelton Valley and the Random Spur. They offer 2 course options: the traditional ‘Challenge’ course; or the 'Epic' course option for those who wish to race harder for longer. The epic course continues climbing from Kaiwara Saddle to the tops along rough farm track before re-joining the challenge course at the end of the Ethelton Valley. This adds 30 mins to the riding time. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. For more information and to enter visit or email

Sun 7 February 2016 - Dodzy Memorial Enduro - Nelson
James “Dodzy” Dodds was a friend and inspiration to thousands of mountainbikers. He was a talented rider, racer, skills coach, trail builder, bike designer and all round nice guy. His life was tragically cut short in September 2012. Dodzy was one of the joint architects of the trail network in Wairoa Gorge and the Dodzy Memorial Enduro celebrates his vision, talent and contribution to New Zealand mountain biking. The grading system at Wairoa is your standard 5 grade system - they have grades 2-5. Be prepared for a higher level of riding than most other bike parks. Roots, rocks, and general Gnar. See

Tuesday 9 February 2016 - Port Hills Hillclimb Series, Worsleys Track, Christchurch
Note: The Worlseys round will not be held if the felling of Worsleys Spur conincides with the date of the race. Annual three race series organised by the Christchurch Singletrack Club. The King & Queen of Sticky Race has become an iconic MTB event held on some of the best single track that Wanaka has to offer. Run by Bike Wanaka.

Tuesday 16 February 2016 - Port Hills Hillclimb Series, C2-Upper Crocodile-Kennedys Track, Christchurch
Annual three race series organised by the Christchurch Singletrack Club. A midweek evening fun hillclimb time trial series using Rapaki, Worsleys and C2/Crocodile/Kennedys. Sat 20 February 2016 - Coppermine Epic - Nelson
Don't miss this one! Simply awesome. Mountainbike courses don't come better than this. The main race features 40km of Nelson’s epic mountain bike trails incorporating a loop of the stunning mineral belt. The loop starts in central Nelson and joins the historic Dun Mountain Rail Trail, a flowing gently inclined singletrack leading to a climb up the Classic to almost 900m to the top of Fringe Hill. Followed by the undulating Black Diamond Ridge single track through spectacular native bush. After rejoining the rail trail to complete the loop of the mineral belt with an 850m descent of the new challenge in descending; “Boulder valley”. There is also an easier option (but same distance) that avoids both the grunt up to the summit of Fringe Hill and Black Diamond Ridge. Entry numbers are restricted. Sat 20 - Sun 21 February 2016 - World 24 Hour Solo MTB Champs - Rotorua
After stopping off in Italy in 2012, Australia 2013, Scotland 2014, United States of America 2015, the WEMBO World Solo 24 hour Solo Mountain Bike Championship will again come back to the Southern Hemisphere. The excitement begins to build on the Friday 13th of February as the 4th Rotorua Bike Festival kicks off with over 30 events and will draw to a close with the World Solo 24 hour Solo Mountain Bike Championship. Sat 20 February 2016 - MTBNZ MTB Cup - Hawea
Held on a private track in Hawea that is not available to ride normally. Has some excellent technical sections. Locals/sport category for those who want to ride the track without wishing to take it too seriously (only $30). Organised by Bike Wanaka.

Sun 21 February 2016 - Sheffield Sharks Rugby Club MTB Race - Sheffield
45 minutes from Christchurch, 981 Dalethorpe Rd, Sheffield. Starts 10am (rego from 8am). The opportunity to ride over some of the great country the Sheffield community has to offer, riding over three privately owned farms. This is a 25km race for the young and the young at heart! Riding through paddocks, 4WD tracks, and weaving through tussock country. There are a couple of steep short climbs, rewarded by fantastic views of the Canterbury plains and balanced with invigorating descents! See

Sat 27 February 2016 - 4 x 2 Relay Event - Timaru
Held at the Scenic Reserve (Centennial Park) in Timaru, this event is for solos or teams of 2, where you complete as many laps of a short very fast and fun hardpacked track you can in 4 hours. This is a fundraising event for trail development. More info and entry forms later in 2015 at

Sat 27 February 2016 - Mt Somers MTB Classic - Mt Somers
Three courses to cater for all abilities over Mt Somers Station, 35km Mountain Challenge,30km Foothills Race and the 20km Lowland ride. All races start and finish at the Mt Somers Domain followed by lunch that is included in the entry fee. This is the eleventh running of this event and is just over an hours drive from ChCh. Sat 27 February 2016 - Ruapehu Express - Central Plateau
A classic 55km XC point to point race/ride mostly across private land with exclusive access for this event only! Riders start on the Tukino Ski field Road and will be treated to a huge variety of terrain and trails including leg 1: NZ Army tussock/desert landscape LAV tracks, leg 2: the myriad of trails in the Karioi pine forest which wraps around the Whangaehu and Wahianoa Rivers, leg 3: the beautiful native Rangataua forest, leg 4: a smattering of farm land and quick dash to Ohakune on the tar sealed roads. There is also a shorter 21km course for those wanting a shorter challenge. Riders start mid way though the Karioi forest, then wind their way through the Rangataua native forest ending with a glide down to the finish line at Ohakune.

This is the first ever North Island stage race and has been put together so that professional and amateur riders can compete on the same route, at the same time for the same prize money, or the best photos along the route. The Kiwi Crusade is a 7 day, 7 stage, 2 man team, fully supported MTB stage race. See

Sat 5 March 2016 - Karapoti Classic - Upper Hutt
NZ's longest standing MTB event, having been run since mid 80's! Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti is one of NZ's premier endurance mountainbike events. Sat 5 March 2016 - Motatapu, Wanaka
50km very scenic ride in awesome countryside from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first seven kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm trail climbing gradually over undulating terrain, with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Depending on recent rainfall, rivers can be up to thigh deep. Heaps of info and entry forms are at This event fills up real fast so need to get in early.

A very popular 36km ride from Burkes Pass to the Albury Tavern, utilising gravel roads and 4WD tracks. Limited to 1000 riders.

The pinnacle of the New Zealand Race Calendar - who will wear the black fern jersey in 2016? Cardrona is an excellent venue for riders and spectators (commonly known as hecklers). The blue trails will be open for riding during the racing making it a pretty special day for any bike rider. Hosted by Bike Wanaka. and

Sun 20 March 2016 - Mt Peel MTB Marathon - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This is a fantastic event for anyone looking for a seriously challenging ride. The course is 85km long and probably the toughest single day MTB course in New Zealand. Climbing to over 1500m, the course includes about 10km of flat roads but most of it is on 4WD tracks (some quite rocky and rough) which allow magnificent views of the Southern Alps. About an hour is spent on a very exposed ridgeline before a steep, rocky descent to the Hewson and Orari Rivers, then returning to Peel Forest via Blue Mountain Station and the low Scotsburn range. There is over 2340m of climbing (mostly in one big very long climb!), so This is NOT A RACE FOR NOVICES! For those wanting an easier course then try the Blue Mountains course. Sun 20 March 2016 - Blue Mountain Gorges Challenge - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This course is simply awesome. Run in conjunction with the Mt Peel event. It is a true adventure that will challenge riders of any ability. With fast gravel, grunty climbs, rough 4WD tracks, numerous river and stream crossings, open grass flats, it simply has it all and is a must-do course for anyone who enjoys challenging adventure courses. It's around 65km long and covers some fantastic inland South Canterbury terrain. The route, incorporating over 1000m of altitude gain and loss, leaves Peel Forest and follows the Orari Gorge to Lochaber Station. There the route joins the course of the marathon for its return to Peel Forest township via Andrews Stream. There are no major climbs but is very undulating. A 6-hour event for teams of 2-4 riders that uses a 7km course on the banks of the Ashley River. Proceeds going towards the MainPower Primary Schools Swimming Programme.

Sun 20 March 2016 - Wombat 100 - Victoria, Australia
One of the most exciting MTB marathon events in Australia. The event traverses Wombat State Forest and private property with fast fire trail, forest riding and up to 50% flowing single track with absolutely no tarmac! More details at

Sat 26 March 2016 - Quartzopolis Challenge - Reefton, West Coast
Organised by the Westland MTB Club. A 38km course that goes from Reefton to the historic township of Waiuta, via Big River mine – 50% historic road, 40% pack track, 10% grunt/carry. Sat 2 April 2016 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is an awesome course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. The course is around 8km long. With a team of mates, work colleagues, school friends, or even the family, here is an event that is manageable by all. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of forest roads and single track riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems, based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Sat 2 April 2016 - Naseby 12 Hour Challenge - Naseby
Now in it's 11th year. Start/finish area is at the Larchview Campground, Naseby. 9am till 9pm. Entry normally about $60 per person (solo or team). Sat 2 April 2016 - Arrowsmith Thee Ride - Lake Heron
A 42km course on the very scenic Mt Arrowsmith Station, Lake Heron, Canterbury (just tucked in behind Mt Somers). The course heads up the Cameron Valley, nearly to the source of the river, up and over a high saddle, down into the South Ashburton Valley and then back down to the finish via a long undulating valley ride and a small saddle. The course uses rough 4WD tracks and involves a couple of decent climbs, the first of which is reasonably steep in places and quite long, and also a very cool boulder scree crossing. Three rides available from Colville at the remote northern end of the Coromandel Peninsula:
- The signature event the 72km Le Originale - a tough marathon ride with heaps of climbing, spectacular views, spectacular descents.
- The 40km Short and Stout - a technical challenging ride but shorter than the big one
- The 24km Flowrider - This honey of a ride is designed for those who want a day out on the bike but something not too tough. Its 100% rideable, offers a mix of non technical singletrack, farm tracks and gravel roads - and the chance of a swim at beautiful Waikawau Bay.

Sat 16 April 2016 - Kaiteriteri 6 hour relay - Kaiteriteri MTB Park
6 Hours of fun riding through the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park. Enter solo if you dare, or in relay-style teams of 2-4. Laps take 20-30 min depending on fitness and ability, with the course suitable for those with basic MTB skills and above. There's a fun vibe to the event, with many in fancy dress. Spot prizes through the day. Categories: Solo Man, Solo Woman, Men, Women, Mixed, Workplace Challenge, Intermediate (Yr 7 & 8), High School (Yr 9-13). This is the first weekend of the April school holidays so more riders from the likes of Christchurch can easily head up to do it and take advantage of having a bit more time to enjoy the area. One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. A once a year opportunity to race the full 125km circumference of Lake Hawea, near Wanaka (also 95km and 35km options). A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain. Part of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival (5 June – 13 June). Even before Cairns hosted the 1996 MTB World Championships, The iconic Triple RRR (Rural, Rainforest & Reef) cross country event was in its 5th year. The Triple R mountain bike race is the longest running 'point to point' race in Australia. First run in 1991 the race has run consecutively for over 25 years. The event attracts a strong field of local, national and international entrants racing through North Queensland's diverse terrain each year, 2016 aims to increase entrant numbers and international exposure with the 35 km Classic RRR and a 70km Endurance RRR. While we don't list many international events on here, this is one that many Kiwis head over for. They say it is more then a race, its the best 7 days you've ever experienced on a mountainbike. It's a tour of the West Coast of Canada's beautiful state of British Columbia - the trails, the towns, the lifestyle. Epic (avg 50km/day) or Challenge (avg 30km/day) Courses are 70% singletrack. Sat 18 September 2016 - The Gambler - Taupo
This is a 4 hr multi lap race, with a BIG difference! You have 4 different tracks, each track with a different points allocation, and you choose which tracks you ride, when and how often. You accumulate points by completing laps and try to gain maximum points during the 4 hrs race time - thus the Gamble! They are using their local pumice based Taupo Trails at Craters MTB Park, situatied just North of Taupo Township. Are you up for The Gamble? When Mountain biking & Strategy collide.
