The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those of us from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Sun 9 June 2019 - Southern Cross Cyclocross Series - Lake Roto Kohatu, Christchurch
Fun event with both cyclocross and MTB categories.

Sat 15 June 2019 - Winter Solstice 8 hour - Invercargill
Based at the Southland Mountain Bike Club's Sandy Point trail network located at Invercargill City Council's forestry block, Sandy Point, Invercargill. The course will consist of approximately 50% singletrack and 50% access roads. 30 minute laps.

Sun 23 June 2019 - Southern Cross Cyclocross Series - Spencer Park, Christchurch
Fun event with both cyclocross and MTB categories.

Sun 23 June 2019 - Bridge to Bridge North - North Canterbury
30km and 60km courses, finishing in Kaiapoi just by the Bridge on Raven Quay. Bike from the Waimak River Gorge bridge to Kaiapoi along 4WD, stopbanks and forestry tracks.

July 2019

4 - 13 July 2019 - BC Bike Race - British Columbia, CANADA
While we don't list many international events on here, this is one that many Kiwis head overseas for. They say it is more then a race, its the best 7 days you've ever experienced on a mountainbike. It's a tour of the West Coast of Canada's beautiful state of British Columbia - the trails, the towns, the lifestyle. Epic (avg 50km/day) or Challenge (avg 30km/day) Courses are 70% singletrack. This event sells out VERY fast and well ahead of the race date! All the details are at

Sat 3 - Sun 4 August 2019 - Winter Forest Festival - Rotorua
The Winter MTB Classic is the MTB event of the three-event weekend on Rotorua's fantastic Whakarewarewa trail network. 15, 30 and 45 km courses.

Sat 10-Sun 11 August 2019 - CrossFest'19 (Cyclocross Festival and National Champs) - Christchurch
Fun weekend of events at Steam Scene at McLeans Island.

Sun 18 August 2019 - Revolution MTB Race - Alexandra
A three stage event held on the great tracks of the Alexandra basin.

Sun 18 August 2019 - Canterbury MTB Series - Bottle Lake
15 and 30 km loops.$49 per race.

Sun 8 September 2019 - The Gambler - Taupo
This is a 4 hr multi lap race, with a BIG difference! You have 4 different tracks, each track with a different points allocation, and you choose which tracks you ride, when and how often. You accumulate points by completing laps and try to gain maximum points during the 4 hrs race time - thus the Gamble! They are using their local pumice based Taupo Trails at Craters MTB Park, situatied just North of Taupo Township. Are you up for The Gamble? When Mountain biking & Strategy collide.

15 and 30 km loops.$49 per race.

October 2019

Sat 12 October 2019 - Motu 160 Cycle Challenge - Opotiki
A MTB and Road race that you can do as a solo or in a team. The 65km MTB leg on winding hilly forested gravel road is raced with the Motu Challenge multisport competitors and is followed by a road bike leg of 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka Gorge to Opotiki.

Sat 19 October 2019 - The Salmon Run - Rakaia
A 22km intermediate MTB course alongside the Rakaia River.

Sat 26 October 2019 (Labour weekend) - Dusky Trail - Twizel
A great 40km course in the grandeur of the Mackenzie Country as you travel through iconic highcountry stations and take in the magnificent views of Mount Cook, Lake Pukaki, and Lake Benmore. Involves a few river crossings and an overall vertical climb of over just 500m. The Trail follows 4WD farm tracks and has a small section of both singletrack and gravel road. More info at:

Sun 27 October 2019 (Labour weekend) - Whaka 100 - Rotorua
The Big One. 100km of riding over a course that is predominantly singletrack. There is nothing else like it in New Zealand. 3 courses will be offered: 25km, 50km and 100km. Regardless of what course you decide to race one thing is guaranteed: you will be racing in one of the best mountainbike venues in New Zealand.

November 2019

2 November 2019 - K2 Cycle Challenge,

Sat 2 November 2019 - 10 hour Day/Nighter and 6 hour blast - McLeans Island
11km course of easy flat hardpacked gravel track at McLeans Forest Park, Christchurch.

Sat 9 November 2019 - Woodbury Hill Country Challenge - Orari Gorge
4, 11, 19, 27 and 42 km options on the Orari Gorge hillcountry station, just out of Geraldine. Also have run and walk options.

Sat 16 November 2019 - Ride the Wilderness - West Coast Wilderness Trail, West Coast
Four different course options to suit all riders:
- 131 km, Ross to Greymouth
- 100 km, Hokitika to Greymouth
- 64 km, Cowboy Paradise to Greymouth
- 26 km, Kumara to Greymouth
Teams of 2 or 4 can race from Ross and teams of 2 from Cowboy Paradise. See

Sun 24 November 2019 - The Longbeach MTB Coastal Challenge - Hinds
A course with stream crossings, strenuous gullies and farm tracks along the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean. There are four courses:
- the 35Km Classic Track
- the 23km Recreational Track
- the 12km Family Track
- the 5km Kids Ride

Sat 30 November 2019 - Tekapo10 - Lake Tekapo
A 10 hour XC team relay or solo race based in the Lake Tekapo Regional Park, utilising a 7km circuit of 4WD track and singletrack. Great race for all abilities of racers with plenty of passing room. This event is organised as a fundraiser for Mackenzie College. More details on their Facebook page closer to the event

30 November 2019 - Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge,

85km MTB event run alongside the big Taupo roadie event.

Sat 30 November 2019 - Nevis Valley Gutbuster - Bannockburn
A 75km point-to-point adventure ride from Garston to Bannockburn via the Nevis Road. The course is around 75km long and includes two big hills (climbing 800m and 640m) and some 25 or more fords. More details available at

December 2019

Sun 1 December 2019 - Bridge to Bridge - North Canterbury
Bike 58km from the Waimak River Gorge bridge to SH1 along 4WD, stopbanks and forestry tracks. Also this year is a new 115km Enduro option which heads up the North Bank and down the SOuth Bank. Other options are the 30km Willows to SH1 course and a 12km recreational ride.

1-6 December 2019 - The Pioneer stage race - Queenstown

Sat 18 January 2020 - St James MTB Classic - St James Cycle Trail
Two courses in very spectacular countryside: The 65km James Pony Express and the 103km James Epic. Really stunning highcountry location and great course. They also have heaps of running and multisport course options.

February 2020

7-8 February 2020 - Coast to Coast,

Sat 8 February 2020 - Gold Trail MTB Ride - Shantytown, West Coast
A 40km ride from Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner) by a route never done before this event. Ride through the history of the West Coast and the Gold Trails that both our ancestors and many Chinese walked, in the search for their riches of the Gold of the West Coast.

20-23 February 2020 - The Escape Stage Race - Hawkes Bay
5 and 3 day options for solo riders or teams of two.

Sat 22 February 2020 - Moonshine Trail - Gore
Southlandís premier mountainbike event. MTB courses range from 30 to 50 km. An awesome warm up for the Motatapu. Held at Dolamore Park, just out of Gore. See

Sat 22 February 2020 - Ruapehu Express - Central Plateau
A classic 55km XC point to point race/ride mostly across private land with exclusive access for this event only! Riders start on the Tukino Ski field Road and will be treated to a huge variety of terrain and trails including leg 1: NZ Army tussock/desert landscape LAV tracks, leg 2: the myriad of trails in the Karioi pine forest which wraps around the Whangaehu and Wahianoa Rivers, leg 3: the beautiful native Rangataua forest, leg 4: a smattering of farm land and quick dash to Ohakune on the tar sealed roads. There is also a shorter 21km course for those wanting a shorter challenge. Riders start mid way though the Karioi forest, then wind their way through the Rangataua native forest ending with a glide down to the finish line at Ohakune.

Sat 29 February 2020 - Bluebridge Karapoti Classic - Wellington
NZís longest running mountainbike event. 50km, 20km, and Kids 5km options. Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti Classic is NZís premier MTB event. Established in 1986, it is renowned worldwide as the Southern Hemisphereís longest running MTB event. This old-school adventure ride combines a huge but achievable challenge with superb scenery and an awesome social scene. Be quick... entries are limited to 1000 starters.

March 2020

Sat 7 March 2020 - Triple Peaks Challenge - Hawkes Bay
47km ride over three peaks in the Hawkes Bay.

Sat 14 March 2020 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first few kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm track climbing gradually over undulating terrain with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Depending on recent rainfall, rivers can be up to thigh deep. or contact This event fills up really fast so you need to get in early.

21 March 2020 - Le Race,

Sat 21 March 2020 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is a great course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of double track and singletrack riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems. Based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Sat 21 March 2020 - The Dual, Motutapu-Rangitoto Traverse - Auckland
Choose either a 30 or 50km course that traverses the stunning volcanic Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands just off Auckland's east coast. Your entry includes a ferry trip out there and back from Auckland. All the details are at

April 2020

Sat 18 April 2020 - Lake Hawea Epic - Lake Hawea
One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. Circumnavigate the stunning and remote Lake Hawea, next to Wanaka. Ride through the Hunter Valley and Dingleburn Stations past the foothills to the Southern Alps and experience a unique and memorable adventure. Distances for every ability; 35km, 95km, 125km or 160 km. Entries close 31 March.

2 May 2020 - Around Brunner

Sat 23 May 2020 - Mt Isobel Challenge - Hanmer
A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain.
