The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Wed 1 March 2017 - Secondary School Singletracks 2017 Series round 1 - now Montgomery Spur, ChCh
A new series of events for secondary school students being held after school on 5 Wednesday afternoons during March 2017 before the school's road season kicks of in April. All the events are based at the Findlay's Picnic Area at Halswell Quarry and will make use of the MTB singletrack network on the adjacent van Asch property. The series is organised by Murray Anderson, through the Christchurch Singletrack Club who build and maintain the Halswell trail network.

Sat 4 March 2017 - Quartzopolis Challenge - Reefton, West Coast
Organised by the Westland MTB Club. A 38km course that goes from Reefton to the historic township of Waiuta, via Big River mine – 50% historic road, 40% pack track, 10% grunt/carry. www.reefton.co.nz. They are also on Facebook here. In 2016 they are also having a helibike the following day on Kirwins Track. More info about that on the Reefton website also.

Sat 4 March 2017 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first few kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm track climbing gradually over undulating terrain with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Depending on recent rainfall, rivers can be up to thigh deep. More info and entry forms are at http://motatapu.com or contact nzinfo@ironman.com. A 10 hour XC team relay or solo race based in the Lake Tekapo Regional Park, utilising a 7km circuit of 4WD track and singletrack. Great race for all abilities of racers with plenty of passing room. Sun 12 March 2017 - Rakahuri Rage - North Canterbury

Sat 18 March 2017 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is an awesome course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. In 2015 the course was around 6.5km long. With a team of mates, work colleagues, school friends, or even the family, here is an event that is manageable by all. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of double track and singletrack riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems, based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Sat 25 March 2017 - Arrowsmith Thee Ride - Lake Heron
A 42km course on the very scenic Mt Arrowsmith Station, Lake Heron, Canterbury (just tucked in behind Mt Somers). The course heads up the Cameron Valley, nearly to the source of the river, up and over a high saddle, down into the South Ashburton Valley and then back down to the finish via a long undulating valley ride and a small saddle. The course uses rough 4WD tracks and involves a couple of decent climbs, the first of which is reasonably steep in places and quite long, and also a very cool boulder scree crossing. Stunning mountain location with fantastic close-up views of the South Ashburton and Cameron Glaciers and Southern Alps. Sat 25 March 2017 - The Dual, Motutapu-Rangitoto Traverse - Auckland
Choose either a 30 or 50km course that traverses the stunning volcanic Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands just off Auckland's east coast. Your entry includes a ferry trip out there and back from Auckland. All the details are at www.thedual.co.nz

April 2017

Sat 1 April 2017 - Naseby 12 Hour Challenge - Naseby
Now in it's 11th year. Start/finish area is at the Larchview Campground, Naseby. 9am till 9pm. Entry normally about $75 per person (solo or team). The normal 10 (ish) km course includes heaps of sweet singletrack and some forestry roads. More details available at www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz. There are limited entries due to tent site spaces, so best be quick! Entries open 9pm on 1 Feb and all 750+ spots fill up within a few minutes! Sun 2 April 2017 - Kaiwara Classic - Culverden
43km of adventure mountainbiking from Culverden to Cheviot via the Lowry Peaks Range, Kaiwara Saddle, Ethelton Valley and the Random Spur. They offer 2 course options: the traditional ‘Challenge’ course; or the 'Epic' course option for those who wish to race harder for longer. The epic course continues climbing from Kaiwara Saddle to the tops along rough farm track before re-joining the challenge course at the end of the Ethelton Valley. This adds 30 mins to the riding time. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. Fri 7 April 2017 - HUXSTER McLeans primary and intermediate school MTB relay - Christchurch
A popular annual event for years 5-8 at McLeans Forest. Older kids can do solo. Course is usually around 4.5 km. See www.facebook.com/events/1269276519832194/

Note being held this year - returning 2018 - Colville Connection - Coromandel Peninsula
Three rides available from Colville at the remote northern end of the Coromandel Peninsula:
- The signature event the 72km Le Originale - a tough marathon ride with heaps of climbing, spectacular views, spectacular descents.
- The 40km Short and Stout - a technical challenging ride but shorter than the big one
- The 24km Flowrider - This honey of a ride is designed for those who want a day out on the bike but something not too tough. Its 100% rideable, offers a mix of non technical singletrack, farm tracks and gravel roads - and the chance of a swim at beautiful Waikawau Bay.

Sun 9 April 2017 - Whitehorse Big Easy - Waimate
An event for all ages and capabilities, making it a great day out for all the family. It includes a 25km course (600m climbing) and a 10km course, that include private forestry tracks and farm tracks with challenging hill climbs, great downhills and a view that makes it all worthwhile. The Whitehorse Big Easy will encompass three separate events: MTB, walk/run and the Whitehorse Challenge which is a 'Bike and Run' event where teams raise money for charity, and then compete against each other to win the inaugural challenge! All of the courses are loop tracks, starting and ending at the Waimate A&P Showgrounds. There will be camping available at the Waimate A&P Showgrounds on the Saturday night before the event. A weekend of events at the fabulous Kaiteriteri MTB Park.
Saturday 22nd April – Kaiteriteri 6 Hour, 20-30 min laps through the easier tracks for teams and solo riders
Sunday 23rd April – Jaws Enduro, 3 timed stages on intermediate/advanced tracks, culminating in a full length run down the "world famous in NZ" Jaws track
Sunday 23rd April – Big Airs Whip-off, where you can show your style to the world on the newly opened Big Airs track
Sunday 23rd April – MTB Rogaine - navigate your way through the park, collecting points from checkpoints scattered throughout

One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. A once a year opportunity to race the full 125km circumference of Lake Hawea, near Wanaka (also 95km and 35km options). If you are ready to raise the bar then this event is for you. Whether you want to race hard or just take on the challenge and adventure of completing this event, you won’t be disappointed. Fri 28 - Sun 30 April 2017 - Port Hills Classic Festival Weekend, Halswell Quarry, Christchurch
The Port Hills Classic was first organised 30 years ago and is thought to be the second proper MTB event in NZ. To celebrate, we have planned a weekend of events on the Port Hills. One of these will be the annual Port Hills Classic event - this uses all of the great singletrack on the van Asch property, as well as tracks normally unavailable to the public. Starts and finish at Halswell Quarry. There is also going to be a cyclocross race, mini-XC race, hillclimb, enduro, sprint XC race, kids races, movie night and more. Events for the whole family and several disciplines. The enduro will be organised by Gravity Canterbury. All other events will be organised by the Christchurch Singletrack Club who build and maintain the Halswell trail network that theses events are using. The 48km 42 Traverse is a historic logging road – undulating, with a few technical bits and a handful of short river crossings. www.t42.co.nz

Sat 20 & Sun 21 May 2017 – “Weekender” - Blenheim
Saturday is the “Eliminator” at the Mountain Bike Park, Taylor Pass Road. Short course and great warm-up for Sunday. Sunday will be a race/ride on “Dumgree”, a hill country property behind Blenheim. Four courses approx. 10, 20, 30 and 40km with a mix of easier and harder topography. Organised by the Marlborough MTB Club. Sat 27 May 2017 - Mt Isobel Challenge - Hanmer
A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain. Sun 4 June 2017 - RRR Mountain Bike Challenge - Cairns
Part of the week-long Cairns Adventure Festival. Even before Cairns hosted the 1996 MTB World Championships, The iconic Triple RRR (Rural, Rainforest & Reef) cross country event was in its 5th year. The Triple R mountain bike race is the longest running 'point to point' race in Australia. First run in 1991 the race has run consecutively for over 25 years. The event attracts a strong field of local, national and international entrants racing through North Queensland's diverse terrain each year, 2016 aims to increase entrant numbers and international exposure with the 35 km Classic RRR and a 70km Endurance RRR. www.cairnsadventurefestival.com. 5 - 13 July 2017 - BC Bike Race - British Columbia, CANADA
While we don't list many international events on here, this is one that many Kiwis head over for. They say it is more then a race, its the best 7 days you've ever experienced on a mountainbike. It's a tour of the West Coast of Canada's beautiful state of British Columbia - the trails, the towns, the lifestyle. Epic (avg 50km/day) or Challenge (avg 30km/day) Courses are 70% singletrack. This is a 4 hr multi lap race, with a BIG difference! You have 4 different tracks, each track with a different points allocation, and you choose which tracks you ride, when and how often. You accumulate points by completing laps and try to gain maximum points during the 4 hrs race time - thus the Gamble! They are using their local pumice based Taupo Trails at Craters MTB Park, situatied just North of Taupo Township. Are you up for The Gamble? Sun 22 October 2017 - Deans Bank 10 hour - Wanaka
A popular event that has had great rider feedback. The event is held on the purpose built 11km track situated on DOC land alongside the Clutha River at Deans Bank in Wanaka. The track is all singletrack and has been designed for bikers by bikers so it’s fun to ride! The track has been designed to suit riders of all abilities. Team categories or solo. A MTB marathon starting and finishing in the village of Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia. Open to solo or teams. An event for all, with four courses: 14, 55, 110 and 160km offering scenic and challenging routes through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop.
