The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those of us from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. December 2022

Sat 3 December 2022 - Tekapo10 - Lake Tekapo
A 10 hour XC team relay or solo race based in the Lake Tekapo Regional Park, utilising a 7km circuit of 4WD track and singletrack. Great race for all abilities of racers with plenty of passing room. This event is organised as a fundraiser for Mackenzie College. More details on their Facebook page closer to the event

CANCELLED - Was to be Sun 4 December 2022 - Tombstone MTB Race - Hanmer Springs
A great event that uses a 17.5km course (1 or 2 laps) that utilises the relatively new Tombstone track. There is also an easier 7km course option.

Sun 4 December 2022 - Bridge to Bridge - North Canterbury
Bike 58km from the Waimak River Gorge bridge to SH1 along 4WD, stopbanks and forestry tracks. Also a 115km Enduro option which heads up the North Bank and down the South Bank. Other options are the 30km Willows to SH1 course and a 12km recreational ride.

Fri 30 December 2022 - Bannockburn MTB Classic - Bannockburn
A very popular event over the holiday period that takes you into the hills of Bannockburn (just down the road from Queenstown). Three courses to choose from:
- Adventure Ride - 54km with 2000m of climbing - a race for the fit endurance rider.
- Classic Race - 34km of moderate climbs and fast downhills - suited to the hard to average racer
- Sport Ride - 24km of farmland and tracks with a huge steep downhill section before it joins into the Classic course to finish.
- Family Recreation ride - 12km - a relaxing ride for the family

A three round series this year.

Sat 21 January 2023 - MTBNZ XC Series Round 2 - Christchurch,
Round 2 is hosted by us, the Christchurch Singletrack Club! Held at the purpose-built Crocodile XC MTB Park race course, and incorporating a few new features. A three round series this year.

Sat 21 January 2023 - St James MTB Classic - St James Cycle Trail
Two courses in very spectacular countryside: The 35km Mad Cow and the 100km James Epic. Really stunning highcountry location. They also have running and multisport course options.

Sun 5 February 2023 - MTBNZ XC Series Round 3 - Pirongia,
A three round series this year.

Sun 5 February 2023 (Waitangi Weekend) - Gold Trail MTB Ride - Shantytown, West Coast
A 40km ride from Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner).

10-11 February 2023 - Coast to Coast,

Sat 18 February 2023 - Papakaio 8 Hour MTB Challenge - Papakaio, North Otago
An 8hr relay on an 8km course on private land using farmland and forest trails. The 8 km course is a mixture of handbuilt singletrack, historic water races and farm track - plenty of challenge but well within the ability of most social riders. Competitive teams of up to 4, social teams of up to 10 or ride it solo. For more info and to register visit

Sat 18 February 2023 - The Mackenzie - Lake Tekapo
A lap of Lake Tekapo is back on the calendar again, but this time in summer. 88km loop.

Sat 25 February 2023 - Triple Peaks Challenge - Hawkes Bay
47km ride over three peaks in the Hawkes Bay.

March 2023

Sat 4 March 2023 - Karapoti Classic - Wellington
NZís longest running mountainbike event. 50km, 20km, and Kids 5km options. Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti Classic is NZís premier MTB event. Established in 1986, it is renowned worldwide as the Southern Hemisphereís longest running MTB event. This old-school adventure ride combines a huge but achievable challenge with superb scenery and an awesome social scene. Be quick... entries are limited to 1000 starters.

Sat 4 March 2023 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. This is your once a year opportunity to experience the breathtaking high country terrain and traverse the Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe Stations. Also new for 2023 is the 56km Coronet Loop course - a grade 3-4 trail with some technicl aspects, exposure and plenty of climbing.

Fri 10 - Sun 12 March 2023 - The Prospector MTB Stage Race, Alexandra
A very popular three day MTB stage race set in the hills surrounding Alexandra using epic singletrack, gnarly climbs, arm pumping descents, and flowing trails.

Sun 12 March 2023 - Krank It - Christchurch
An event for women and children, held at Bottlelake Forest in both March and August.

Sat 1 April 2023 - Lake Hawea Epic - Lake Hawea
One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. Circumnavigate the stunning and remote Lake Hawea, next to Wanaka. Ride through the Hunter Valley and Dingleburn Stations past the foothills to the Southern Alps and experience a unique and memorable adventure. Distances for every ability; 35km, 95km, 125km or 160 km. Entries close 31 March.

Sun 2 April 2023 - Porirua Grand Traverse - Porirua, Wellington
Established in 2006, the PGT is the grand tour of Porirua's spectacular hills, harbour and coastline. Tackle the full 58km multisport event, or have a crack at the 28km MTB ride on Rangituhi's amazing singletrack paradise. Something for everyone - all ages, all abilities, all amazing! Enter at

20-22 October 2023 (Labour weekend) - Whaka 100 - Rotorua
The Big One. Choose your challenge riding some of the best single-track. There is nothing else like it in New Zealand, or indeed the Southern Hemisphere. Courses for all to challenge themselves: 5km Kids, 10km Fun Ride, 25km, 50km, 100km and Miler (160km). Hosting the UCI Cross Country MTB Marathon and Eliminator National Championships. Regardless of what course you decide to race one thing is guaranteed: you will be racing in one of the best mountain bike venues in New Zealand.

A 12.5km course that uses many of the easier less technical tracks of the Hanmer forest trail network. Heaps more info at

Sat 4 November 2023 - Clifftop Challenge - Le Bons Bay, Bank Peninsula
Choose the 16km or 26km loop using the sealed and gravel Le Bons Rd-Panama Rd-Lavericks Ridge Rd loop.
