The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Sat 23 September 2017 - Day-Night Thriller 3, 6 & 12hr - Tokoroa
NZ's biggest MTB event with over 3000 riders. Open to solo or teams. More info at

Sat 7 - Sun 8 October 2017 - North Island School MTB Champs - Tauranga
Held at Summerhill Recreational Park and hosted by Mountain Bike Tauranga.

Sat 14 October 2017 - 10 hour Day/Nighter and 6 hour blast - McLeans Island

Sat 14 October 2017 - Motu 160 Cycle Challenge - Opotiki
A MTB and Road race that you can do as a solo or in a team. The 65km MTB leg on winding hilly forested gravel road is raced with the Motu Challenge multisport competitors and is followed by a road bike leg of 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka Gorge to Opotiki.

Sat 14 - Sun 15 October 2017 - South Island School MTB Champs - Dunedin
Held at Signal Hill and hosted by Mountain Bike Otago.

Sat 21 October 2017 (Labour weekend) - Dusky Trail - Twizel
A great 40km course in the grandeur of the Mackenzie Country as you travel through iconic highcountry stations and take in the magnificent views of Mount Cook, Lake Pukaki, and Lake Benmore. Involves a few river crossings and an overall vertical climb of over just 500m. The Trail follows 4WD farm tracks and has a small section of both singletrack and gravel road. More info at:

Sun 22 October 2017 (Labour w/end) - Cheviot Hills Challenge - Cheviot
A multi-lap format race held within the Cheviot Hills Reserve, 1.5 hours drive North of Christchurch. Choices range from one 7km lap for team riders through to 4 laps for expert class riders. Course is a mix of singletrack, 4WD farm track and grass berm. Great chance to test the end of season form. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. Sun 22 October 2017 (Labour w/end) - Milk and Honey Race - Takaka, Golden Bay
One race, two bikes, one big hill. The Milk and Honey Race combines one of New Zealand’s biggest road climbs and longest stretches of downhill singletrack into one event. Join the Takaka Hill and the Rameka Track together, start and finish in Takaka, Golden Bay and you have an iconic road and mountainbike race that tests all-round riding skills. Roadies can team up with a mountain biker or you can go it alone with two different bikes. With a main street start and finish and famous Golden Bay hospitality, the Milk and Honey Race is one to enter now. Enter online at

Sun 22 October 2017 (Labour w/end) - Deans Bank 10 hour - Wanaka
A popular event that has had great rider feedback. The event is held on the purpose built 11km track situated on DOC land alongside the Clutha River at Deans Bank in Wanaka. The track is all singletrack and has been designed for bikers by bikers so it’s fun to ride! The track has been designed to suit riders of all abilities. Team categories or solo. See

Sat 11 - Sun 12 November 2017 - The Highland Fling - THE VERY LAST ONE! - Bundanoon, Southern Highlands, NSW,
A MTB marathon starting and finishing in the village of Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia. Open to solo or teams. An event for all, with four courses: 14, 55, 110 and 160km offering scenic and challenging routes through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop. Sat 18 Novermber 2017 (Canterbury Show Weekend) - Ride the Wilderness - West Coast Wilderness Trail, West Coast
A new race for 2017, with four different course options to suit all riders:
- 131 km, Ross to Greymouth
- 100 km, Hokitika to Greymouth
- 64 km, Cowboy Paradise to Greymouth
- 26 km, Kumara to Greymouth
Teams of 2 or 4 can race from Ross and teams of 2 from Cowboy Paradise. See

A 75km point-to-point adventure ride from Garston to Bannockburn via the Nevis Road. The course is around 75km long and includes two big hills (climbing 800m and 640m) and some 25 or more fords. More details available at

85km MTB event run alongside the big roadie event.

Sun 26 November 2017 - The Longbeach MTB Coastal Challenge - Hinds
A course with stream crossings, strenuous gullies and farm tracks along the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean. There are four courses:
- the 35Km Classic Track
- the 23km Recreational Track
- the 12km Family Track
- the 5km Kids Ride

Sun 3 December 2017 - Bridge to Bridge - North Canterbury
Bike 58 km from the Waimak River Gorge bridge to SH1 along 4WD, stopbanks and forestry tracks. Also a 30km Willows to SH1 course and a 12km recreational ride, along with 3 running courses).

Sat 30 December 2017 - Bannockburn MTB Classic - Bannockburn
A very popular event over the holiday period that takes you into the hills of Bannockburn (just down the road from Queenstown). Three courses to choose from:
Classic ride - 35km of gravel roads and undulating 4WD tracks with a climb of about 600m. Ride time of 1hr 30min - 3hrs
Sport ride - 22km of gravel roads and 4WD tracks with a climb of 350m. Ride time of 45min - 1hr 45min

Two courses in very spectacular countryside: The 65km James Pony Express and the 103km James Epic. Really stunning highcountry location and great course. They also have heaps of running and multisport course options.

Sun 4 February 2018 - South Island XCO Champs - Crocodile XC MTB Park, Christchurch
Hosted by the Christchurch Singletrack Club! We're using a sweet 4.7km (160m of climbing per lap) purpose-built race course that uses a few brand new tracks and some existing tracks. More details about the event will become available at Entry is done through the MTBNZ site for the event...

Sun 4 February 2018 - Gold Trail MTB Ride - Shantytown, West Coast
A 40km ride from Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner) by a route never done before this event. Ride through the history of the West Coast and the Gold Trails that both our ancestors and many Chinese walked, in the search for their riches of the Gold of the West Coast.

Sat 10 February 2018 - Moonshine Trail - Gore
Southland’s premier mountainbike, off-road run and duathlon event. MTB courses range from 30 to 50 km. An awesome warm up for the Motatapu. Held at Dolamore Park, just out of Gore. See

Sat 10 - Sun 11 February 2018 - Oceania XCO Champs - Signal Hill, Dunedin
The 2018 Oceania MTB Championships is the region's premier UCI Mountain Bike event. Held in rotation between Australia and New Zealand - it is New Zealand's turn to host the best MTB riders in the region for the Continental Championships. Hosted by Mountain Biking Otago in partnership with Cycling New Zealand and Mountain Bike New Zealand. Both the DH and XCO will be at Signal Hill.

9-10 February 2018 - Coast to Coast,

Sat 10 February 2018 - Coppermine Epic - Nelson
Don't miss this one! Simply awesome. Mountainbike courses don't come better than this. The main race features 40km of Nelson’s epic mountain bike trails incorporating a loop of the stunning mineral belt. The loop starts in central Nelson and joins the historic Dun Mountain Rail Trail, a flowing gently inclined singletrack leading to a climb up the Classic to almost 900m to the top of Fringe Hill. Followed by the undulating Black Diamond Ridge single track through spectacular native bush. After rejoining the rail trail to complete the loop of the mineral belt with an 850m descent of the new challenge in descending; “Boulder valley”. There is also an easier option (but same distance) that avoids both the grunt up to the summit of Fringe Hill and Black Diamond Ridge. Entry numbers are restricted. Sat 17 February 2018 - Karapoti Classic - Upper Hutt
NZ's longest standing MTB event, having been run since mid 80's! Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti is one of NZ's premier endurance mountainbike events. Sun 18 February 2018 - Sheffield Rugby Club MTB Race - Sheffield
45 minutes from Christchurch, 981 Dalethorpe Rd, Sheffield. The opportunity to ride over some of the great country the Sheffield community has to offer, riding over three privately owned farms. This is a 25km race for the young and the young at heart! Riding through paddocks, 4WD tracks, and weaving through tussock country. There are a couple of steep short climbs, rewarded by fantastic views of the Canterbury plains and balanced with invigorating descents! See

24 February 2018 - Ride The Rakaia,

Sat 24 February 2018 - Ruapehu Express - Central Plateau
A classic 55km XC point to point race/ride mostly across private land with exclusive access for this event only! Riders start on the Tukino Ski field Road and will be treated to a huge variety of terrain and trails including leg 1: NZ Army tussock/desert landscape LAV tracks, leg 2: the myriad of trails in the Karioi pine forest which wraps around the Whangaehu and Wahianoa Rivers, leg 3: the beautiful native Rangataua forest, leg 4: a smattering of farm land and quick dash to Ohakune on the tar sealed roads. There is also a shorter 21km course for those wanting a shorter challenge. Riders start mid way though the Karioi forest, then wind their way through the Rangataua native forest ending with a glide down to the finish line at Ohakune.

Sat 10 March 2018 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first few kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm track climbing gradually over undulating terrain with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Depending on recent rainfall, rivers can be up to thigh deep. More info and entry forms are at or contact This event fills up really fast so you need to get in early.

47km ride over three peaks in the Hawkes Bay.

Sat 17 March 2018 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is a great course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of double track and singletrack riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems. Based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Sat 7 April 2018 - Naseby 12 Hour Challenge - Naseby
Awesome, awesome, awesome! The best relay event around. Start/finish area is at the Larchview Campground, Naseby. Usually 9am till 9pm. The normal 10 (ish) km course includes heaps of sweet singletrack and some forestry roads. More details available at There are limited entries due to tent site spaces, so best be quick! One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. A once a year opportunity to race the full 125km circumference of Lake Hawea, near Wanaka (also 95km and 35km options). Sat 26 May 2018 - Mt Isobel Challenge - Hanmer
A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain. 5 - 13 July 2018 - BC Bike Race - British Columbia, CANADA
While we don't list many international events on here, this is one that many Kiwis head overseas for. They say it is more then a race, its the best 7 days you've ever experienced on a mountainbike. It's a tour of the West Coast of Canada's beautiful state of British Columbia - the trails, the towns, the lifestyle. Epic (avg 50km/day) or Challenge (avg 30km/day) Courses are 70% singletrack. This event sells out VERY fast and well ahead of the race date! All the details are at
