The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those of us from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Sat 7 April 2018 - Naseby 12 Hour Challenge - Naseby
Awesome, awesome, awesome! The best relay event around. Start/finish area is at the Larchview Campground, Naseby. Usually 9am till 9pm. The normal 10 (ish) km course includes heaps of sweet singletrack and some forestry roads. More details available at There are limited entries due to tent site spaces, so best be quick! Entries open on 1 Feb and all 750+ spots fill up within a few minutes! Solo spots take a little longer but you'll still want to be quick. 7 April 2018 - Graperide

Sun 8 April 2018 - Kaiwara Classic - Culverden
43km of adventure mountainbiking from Culverden to Cheviot via the Lowry Peaks Range, Kaiwara Saddle, Ethelton Valley and the Random Spur. They offer 2 course options: the traditional ‘Challenge’ course; or the 'Epic' course option for those who wish to race harder for longer. The epic course continues climbing from Kaiwara Saddle to the tops along rough farm track before re-joining the challenge course at the end of the Ethelton Valley. This adds 30 mins to the riding time. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. For more information and to enter visit or email

Sun 8 April 2018 - Whitehorse Big Easy - Waimate
The Whitehorse Big Easy Event encompasses three separate events: bike, walk/run, and a team event - The Whitehorse Challenge. All of these are loop tracks, starting and ending at the Waimate A&P Show grounds. We also have 1.5km run or bike courses for younger children.

Sat 14 April 2018 - Contact Epic - Lake Hawea
One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. A once a year opportunity to race the full 125km circumference of Lake Hawea, near Wanaka (also 95km and 35km options). If you are ready to raise the bar then this event is for you. Whether you want to race hard or just take on the challenge and adventure of completing this event, you won’t be disappointed. A weekend of events at the fabulous Kaiteriteri MTB Park.
Saturday 21st April – Kaiteriteri 6 Hour, 20-30 min laps through the easier tracks for teams and solo riders
Sunday 22nd April – Jaws Enduro, 3 timed stages on intermediate/advanced tracks, culminating in a full length run down the "world famous in NZ" Jaws track
Sunday 22nd April – Big Airs Whip-off, where you can show your style to the world on the newly opened Big Airs track
Sunday 22nd April – MTB Rogaine - navigate your way through the park, collecting points from checkpoints scattered throughout

Sat 26 May 2018 - Mt Isobel Challenge - Hanmer
A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain. Fun event with both cyclocross and MTB categories.

June 2018

Sat 23 June 2018 - Winter Solstice 8 hour - Invercargill
Based at the Southland Mountain Bike Club's Sandy Point trail network located at Invercargill City Council's forestry block, Sandy Point, Invercargill. The transition area for team riders will be part of the course but located in a designated area outside the forestry block. The course will consist of approximately 50% singletrack and 50% access roads. 30 minute laps. Open to riders aged 13 years or older on race day.

Sun 24 June 2018 - Bridge to Bridge North - North Canterbury
30km and 60km courses, finishing in Kaiapoi this year just by the Bridge on Raven Quay. No Car Parking issues with getting stuck. Bike from the Waimak River Gorge bridge to Kaiapoi along 4WD, stopbanks and forestry tracks.

5 - 13 July 2018 - BC Bike Race - British Columbia, CANADA
While we don't list many international events on here, this is one that many Kiwis head overseas for. They say it is more then a race, its the best 7 days you've ever experienced on a mountainbike. It's a tour of the West Coast of Canada's beautiful state of British Columbia - the trails, the towns, the lifestyle. Epic (avg 50km/day) or Challenge (avg 30km/day) Courses are 70% singletrack. This event sells out VERY fast and well ahead of the race date! All the details are at

Sun 16 September 2018 - The Gambler - Taupo
This is a 4 hr multi lap race, with a BIG difference! You have 4 different tracks, each track with a different points allocation, and you choose which tracks you ride, when and how often. You accumulate points by completing laps and try to gain maximum points during the 4 hrs race time - thus the Gamble! They are using their local pumice based Taupo Trails at Craters MTB Park, situatied just North of Taupo Township. Are you up for The Gamble? When Mountain biking & Strategy collide.

Sat 13 October 2018 - Motu 160 Cycle Challenge - Opotiki
A MTB and Road race that you can do as a solo or in a team. The 65km MTB leg on winding hilly forested gravel road is raced with the Motu Challenge multisport competitors and is followed by a road bike leg of 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka Gorge to Opotiki.

Sun 21 October 2018 (Labour weekend) - Whaka 100 - Rotorua
The Big One. 100km of riding over a course that is predominantly singletrack. There is nothing else like it in New Zealand. 3 courses will be offered: 25km, 50km and 100km. Regardless of what course you decide to race one thing is guaranteed: you will be racing in one of the best mountainbike venues in New Zealand.

Sun 21 October 2018 (Labour weekend) - Milk and Honey Race - Takaka, Golden Bay
One race, two bikes, one big hill. The Milk and Honey Race combines one of New Zealand’s biggest road climbs and longest stretches of downhill singletrack into one event. Join the Takaka Hill and the Rameka Track together, start and finish in Takaka, Golden Bay and you have an iconic road and mountainbike race that tests all-round riding skills. Roadies can team up with a mountain biker or you can go it alone with two different bikes. 11km course of easy flat hardpacked gravel track at McLeans Forest Park, Christchurch.

Sat 3 November 2018 - Timaru 10 Hour Day/Night MTB Race - Centennial Park, Timaru
A team relay event riding laps over a 10 hour period. 10 Hour Race starts at 9am and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. The 6 Hour race starts at 1pm and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. Fantastic singletrack course that is fast and challenging with loads of ups and downs but no big hills so ideal for both teams and solo. 10 hour teams of up to 5 riders or solo 10 Hour. A course with stream crossings, strenuous gullies and farm tracks along the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean. There are four courses:

A 40km ride from Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner) by a route never done before this event. Ride through the history of the West Coast and the Gold Trails that both our ancestors and many Chinese walked, in the search for their riches of the Gold of the West Coast.
