The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those of us from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Fun event with both cyclocross and MTB categories.

A three stage event held on the great tracks of the Alexandra basin.

Three race series on Rotorua's fantastic Whakarewarewa trail network.

Sun 16 September 2018 - The Gambler - Taupo
This is a 4 hr multi lap race, with a BIG difference! You have 4 different tracks, each track with a different points allocation, and you choose which tracks you ride, when and how often. You accumulate points by completing laps and try to gain maximum points during the 4 hrs race time - thus the Gamble! They are using their local pumice based Taupo Trails at Craters MTB Park, situatied just North of Taupo Township. Are you up for The Gamble? When Mountain biking & Strategy collide.

Sun 23 September 2018 - Linger & Die XC - Alexandra
A 20-30 km XC race on mostly singletrack and some 4WD tracks in the area to the east of Alexandra, including flowing fast singletrack and technical rock

Our various series of races... short track, XC races, hillclimbs (reverse enduro format again?) etc will be held through spring and summer from around October onwards. More details to be released during August probably.

Held at Signal Hill and hosted by Mountain Bike Otago.

Sat 13 October 2018 - Motu 160 Cycle Challenge - Opotiki
A MTB and Road race that you can do as a solo or in a team. The 65km MTB leg on winding hilly forested gravel road is raced with the Motu Challenge multisport competitors and is followed by a road bike leg of 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka Gorge to Opotiki.

Sat 20 October 2018 (Labour weekend) - Dusky Trail - Twizel
A great 40km course in the grandeur of the Mackenzie Country as you travel through iconic highcountry stations and take in the magnificent views of Mount Cook, Lake Pukaki, and Lake Benmore. Involves a few river crossings and an overall vertical climb of over just 500m. The Trail follows 4WD farm tracks and has a small section of both singletrack and gravel road. More info at:

Sun 21 October 2018 (Labour weekend) - Deans Bank 10 hour - Wanaka
A popular event that has had great rider feedback. The event is held on the fantastic purpose built 11km track situated on DOC land alongside the Clutha River at Deans Bank in Wanaka. The track is all singletrack and has been designed for bikers by bikers so it’s fun to ride! The track has been designed to suit riders of all abilities. Team categories or solo. See

Sun 21 October 2018 (Labour weekend) - Whaka 100 - Rotorua
The Big One. 100km of riding over a course that is predominantly singletrack. There is nothing else like it in New Zealand. 3 courses will be offered: 25km, 50km and 100km. Regardless of what course you decide to race one thing is guaranteed: you will be racing in one of the best mountainbike venues in New Zealand.

Sun 21 October 2018 (Labour weekend) - Milk and Honey Race - Takaka, Golden Bay
One race, two bikes, one big hill. The Milk and Honey Race combines one of New Zealand’s biggest road climbs and longest stretches of downhill singletrack into one event. Join the Takaka Hill and the Rameka Track together, start and finish in Takaka, Golden Bay and you have an iconic road and mountainbike race that tests all-round riding skills. Roadies can team up with a mountain biker or you can go it alone with two different bikes. With a main street start and finish and famous Golden Bay hospitality, the Milk and Honey Race is one to enter now. Enter online at

Sat 27 October 2018 - 10 hour Day/Nighter and 6 hour blast - McLeans Island
11km course of easy flat hardpacked gravel track at McLeans Forest Park, Christchurch.

Sat 3 November 2018 - Timaru 10 Hour Day/Night MTB Race - Centennial Park, Timaru
A team relay event riding laps over a 10 hour period. 10 Hour Race starts at 9am and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. The 6 Hour race starts at 1pm and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. Fantastic singletrack course that is fast and challenging with loads of ups and downs but no big hills so ideal for both teams and solo. 10 hour teams of up to 5 riders or solo 10 Hour. Sat 17 Novermber 2018 (Canterbury Show Weekend) - Ride the Wilderness - West Coast Wilderness Trail, West Coast
Four different course options to suit all riders:
- 131 km, Ross to Greymouth
- 100 km, Hokitika to Greymouth
- 64 km, Cowboy Paradise to Greymouth
- 26 km, Kumara to Greymouth
Teams of 2 or 4 can race from Ross and teams of 2 from Cowboy Paradise. See

85km MTB event run alongside the big Taupo roadie event.

Sat 24 November 2018 - Nevis Valley Gutbuster - Bannockburn
A 75km point-to-point adventure ride from Garston to Bannockburn via the Nevis Road. The course is around 75km long and includes two big hills (climbing 800m and 640m) and some 25 or more fords. More details available at

Sun 25 November 2018 - The Longbeach MTB Coastal Challenge - Hinds
A course with stream crossings, strenuous gullies and farm tracks along the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean. There are four courses:
- the 35Km Classic Track
- the 23km Recreational Track
- the 12km Family Track
- the 5km Kids Ride

Sun 2 December 2018 - Bridge to Bridge - North Canterbury
Bike 58km from the Waimak River Gorge bridge to SH1 along 4WD, stopbanks and forestry tracks. Also this year is a new 115km Enduro option which heads up the North Bank and down the SOuth Bank. Other options are the 30km Willows to SH1 course and a 12km recreational ride.

Sat 8 December 2018 - Tekapo10 - Lake Tekapo
A 10 hour XC team relay or solo race based in the Lake Tekapo Regional Park, utilising a 7km circuit of 4WD track and singletrack. Great race for all abilities of racers with plenty of passing room. Sun 30 December 2018 - Bannockburn MTB Classic - Bannockburn
A very popular event over the holiday period that takes you into the hills of Bannockburn (just down the road from Queenstown). Three courses to choose from:
Classic ride - 35km of gravel roads and undulating 4WD tracks with a climb of about 600m. Ride time of 1hr 30min - 3hrs
Sport ride - 22km of gravel roads and 4WD tracks with a climb of 350m. Ride time of 45min - 1hr 45min

January 2019

The South Island Champs (SIXCO 2019), North Island Champs, National Champs and Oceania Champs (in Aussie in 2019) will all be held in the first few weeks of the year. Details should be released by MTBNZ around August 2018

Sat 19 January 2019 - St James MTB Classic - St James Cycle Trail
Two courses in very spectacular countryside: The 65km James Pony Express and the 103km James Epic. Really stunning highcountry location and great course. They also have heaps of running and multisport course options.

February 2019

Sun 3 February 2019 - Gold Trail MTB Ride - Shantytown, West Coast
A 40km ride from Shantytown to Moana (Lake Brunner) by a route never done before this event. Ride through the history of the West Coast and the Gold Trails that both our ancestors and many Chinese walked, in the search for their riches of the Gold of the West Coast.

Sat 9 February 2019 - Moonshine Trail - Gore
Southland’s premier mountainbike event. MTB courses range from 30 to 50 km. An awesome warm up for the Motatapu. Held at Dolamore Park, just out of Gore. See

Sun 10 February 2019 - Red Zone 6 - Christchurch
6hr event on an 11km circuit around the streets of the Burwood red zone area.

Sat 16 February 2019 - Coppermine Epic - Nelson
Don't miss this one! Simply awesome. Mountainbike courses don't come better than this. The main race features 40km of Nelson’s epic mountain bike trails incorporating a loop of the stunning mineral belt. The loop starts in central Nelson and joins the historic Dun Mountain Rail Trail, a flowing gently inclined singletrack leading to a climb up the Classic to almost 900m to the top of Fringe Hill. Followed by the undulating Black Diamond Ridge single track through spectacular native bush. After rejoining the rail trail to complete the loop of the mineral belt with an 850m descent of the new challenge in descending; “Boulder valley”. There is also an easier option (but same distance) that avoids both the grunt up to the summit of Fringe Hill and Black Diamond Ridge. Entry numbers are restricted. Sun 17 February 2019 - Sheffield Rugby Club MTB Race - Sheffield
45 minutes from Christchurch, 981 Dalethorpe Rd, Sheffield. The opportunity to ride over some of the great country the Sheffield community has to offer, riding over three privately owned farms. This is a 24km race for the young and the young at heart! Riding through paddocks, 4WD tracks, and weaving through tussock country. There are a couple of steep short climbs, rewarded by fantastic views of the Canterbury plains and balanced with invigorating descents! See

21-25 February 2019 - The Escape Stage Race - Hawkes Bay
5 and 3 day options for solo riders or teams of two.

Sat 23 February 2019 - Mt Somers MTB Classic - Mt Somers
Three courses to suit all abilities and ages on Mt Somers Station, which in the past have been 35, 30 and 20km, but in 2019 will most likely be altered a little due to the new start/finish point. All races start and finish at the Mt Somers Station, one hours drive from ChCh. Visit or their Facebook Page

Sat 23 February 2019 - Ruapehu Express - Central Plateau
A classic 55km XC point to point race/ride mostly across private land with exclusive access for this event only! Riders start on the Tukino Ski field Road and will be treated to a huge variety of terrain and trails including leg 1: NZ Army tussock/desert landscape LAV tracks, leg 2: the myriad of trails in the Karioi pine forest which wraps around the Whangaehu and Wahianoa Rivers, leg 3: the beautiful native Rangataua forest, leg 4: a smattering of farm land and quick dash to Ohakune on the tar sealed roads. There is also a shorter 21km course for those wanting a shorter challenge. Riders start mid way though the Karioi forest, then wind their way through the Rangataua native forest ending with a glide down to the finish line at Ohakune.

Sat 2 March 2019 - Bluebridge Karapoti Classic - Wellington
NZ’s longest running mountainbike event. 50km, 20km, and Kids 5km options. Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti Classic is NZ’s premier MTB event. Established in 1986, it is renowned worldwide as the Southern Hemisphere’s longest running MTB event. This old-school adventure ride combines a huge but achievable challenge with superb scenery and an awesome social scene. Be quick... entries are limited to 1000 starters.

Sat 9 March 2019 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first few kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm track climbing gradually over undulating terrain with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Depending on recent rainfall, rivers can be up to thigh deep. or contact This event fills up really fast so you need to get in early.

Sat 9 March 2019 - Triple Peaks Challenge - Hawkes Bay
47km ride over three peaks in the Hawkes Bay.

Sat 16 March 2019 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is a great course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of double track and singletrack riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems. Based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Choose either a 30 or 50km course that traverses the stunning volcanic Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands just off Auckland's east coast. Your entry includes a ferry trip out there and back from Auckland. All the details are at
