The following is a frequently updated list of all the cross country mountainbike events we know of that may be of interest to cross country mountainbikers (particularly those from Canterbury). While we try to ensure details are correct, the Christchurch Singletrack Club take no responsibility if they are not. Saturday 10 October 2015 (Date TBC) - Club Short Track Series round 1 - Siberia Track, Port Hills
The Christchurch Singletrack Club are running a series of short track races on three Saturday afternoons during October-November for CSC club members. Run the same as the last six years. Three races each day to cater for the most casual to most serious riders. Kids are very welcome to join in but note that the course is hilly so all riders need to be competent with hills and singletrack, although the singletrack we use is pretty easy. NZ's biggest MTB event with over 3000 riders. Open to solo or teams. More info at www.eventpromotions.co.nz

Sat 10 October 2015 - Motu 160 Cycle Challenge - Opotiki
A MTB and Road race that you can do as a solo or in a team. The 65km MTB leg on winding hilly forested gravel road is raced with the Motu Challenge multisport competitors and is followed by a road bike leg of 90km back over Traffords Hill and down Waioeka Gorge to Opotiki. www.motuchallenge.co.nz

A multi-lap format race held within the Cheviot Hills Reserve, 1.5 hours drive North of Christchurch. Choices range from one 7km lap for team riders through to 4 laps for expert class riders. Course is a mix of singletrack, 4WD farm track and grass berm. Great chance to test the end of season form. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. Sat 24 October 2015 (Labour W/end) - Whaka 100 - Rotorua
The Big One. 100km of riding over a course that is predominantly singletrack. There is nothing else like it in New Zealand. 3 courses will be offered: 25km, 50km and 100km. Plus a teams event with a 60km/40km split. Regardless of what course you decide to race one thing is guaranteed: you will be racing in one of the best mountainbike venues in New Zealand. www.n-duro.co.nz

Sun 25 October 2015 (Labour w/end) - Milk and Honey Race - Takaka, Golden Bay
One race, two bikes, one big hill. The Milk and Honey Race combines one of New Zealand’s biggest road climbs and longest stretches of downhill singletrack into one event. Join the Takaka Hill and the Rameka Track together, start and finish in Takaka, Golden Bay and you have an iconic road and mountainbike race that tests all-round riding skills. Roadies can team up with a mountain biker or you can go it alone with two different bikes. Sat 7 November 2015 - Timaru 10 Hour Day/Night MTB Race - Centennial Park, Timaru
While this has always been a 12 hour event, in 2015 they are trialing a 10 hour format. A team relay event riding laps over a 10 hour period. 10 Hour Race starts at 9am and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. Also this year is a new special 2 person 10 hour category. 6 Hour race starts at 1pm and finishes at 7pm with the prize giving at 7.30pm. Fantastic singletrack course that is fast and challenging with loads of ups and downs but no big hills so ideal for both teams and solo. 10 hour teams of up to 5 riders or solo 10 Hour. Sat 7 - Sun 8 November 2015 - Le Petite Brevet - Banks Peninsula
A massive route (usually around 250-300km with well over 6000m of climbing) around Banks Peninsula that you do totally self supported within a 36 hour time limit. If it sounds like your sort of thing then visit http://lepetitebrevet.blogspot.com which outlines all the details.

Sat 7 - Sun 8 November 2015 - The Highland Fling - Bundanoon, Southern Highlands, NSW,
A MTB marathon starting and finishing in the village of Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands, NSW, Australia. Open to solo or teams. An event for all, with four courses: 14, 55, 110 and 160km offering scenic and challenging routes through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop. A 75km point-to-point adventure ride from Garston to Bannockburn via the Nevis Road. The course is around 75km long and includes two big hills (climbing 800m and 640m) and some 25 or more fords. Sun 29 November 2015 - The Longbeach MTB Coastal Challenge - Hinds
A course with stream crossings, strenuous gullies and farm tracks along the beautiful coastline of the Pacific Ocean. There are four courses:
- the 35Km Classic Track for the competitive rider
- the 23km Recreational Track for those who may be new to mountain biking or who just want to enjoy the ride without the pressure of racing
- the 23km Team Track for highly competitive teams
- The 12km Family Track

Sun 24 January 2016 - The Trailblazer - Pureora Forest, Te Kuiti
Held on the fantastic Timber Trail in Waikato's Pureora Forest. 85, 45 and 35km courses. www.dynamoevents.co.nz

Sat 30 January 2016 - St James MTB Classic - St James Cycle Trail
Two courses in spectacular countryside: The 65km James Pony Express and the 103km James Epic. Stunning location and great course. They also have heaps of running and multisport course options. www.stjamesmountainsports.co.nz

Sat 30 January 2016 - The Big Easy - Wanaka
Highest Mountainbike Race in New Zealand. A 48km event starting at the Snow Farm and travelling to the top of Mt Pisa then a big down hill to Luggate, then up to the finish at the Albert Town Tavern. Also an easier 30km course. www.highlandevents.co.nz

Sun 31 Jan - Sat 6 Feb 2016 - The Pioneer Stage Race - Christchurch to Queenstown
The Pioneer is an awe inspiring seven day MTB stage race through NZ’s pristine Southern Alps. The first race of its kind to link together over 500 km of farm tracks, NZ Cycle Trails, double track and singletrack riding in a very special part of the world where soaring mountain peaks, crystal-clear blue lakes, and golden high country await. http://thepioneer.co.nz

Sun 31 January 2016 - The Pioneer Race Christchurch Day Ride - Christchurch
This is your chance to ride the same course as the Pioneer prologue, and then some! Open to anyone to enter, the Christchurch Day ride is being held on the dedicated MTB track network in the Port Hills. Each race distance starts & finishes at the Pioneer event hub in the centre of the city, riders will then warm up with an urban XC course before attacking the hills to complete either 65km, 45km or 30km distances. http://thepioneer.co.nz/christchurch-day-ride/

Sat 6 February 2016 - The Pioneer Race Queenstown Day Ride - Queenstown
This is your chance to ride the final day of the Pioneer seven day MTB stage race! Open to anyone to enter, the Queenstown day ride is the final day of the Pioneer stage race from Snow Farm to Queenstown. The first half of the ride is challenging riding with 2000 m of ascent and some good climbs to reach stunning views, then you will tackle a 12 km descent into Arrowtown before riding the Queenstown Trails network to the finish line. Sun 7 February 2016 - Kaiwara Classic - Culverden
43km of adventure mountainbiking from Culverden to Cheviot via the Lowry Peaks Range, Kaiwara Saddle, Ethelton Valley and the Random Spur. They offer 2 course options: the traditional ‘Challenge’ course; or the 'Epic' course option for those who wish to race harder for longer. The epic course continues climbing from Kaiwara Saddle to the tops along rough farm track before re-joining the challenge course at the end of the Ethelton Valley. This adds 30 mins to the riding time. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. Sun 7 February 2016 - Dodzy Memorial Enduro - Nelson
James “Dodzy” Dodds was a friend and inspiration to thousands of mountainbikers. He was a talented rider, racer, skills coach, trail builder, bike designer and all round nice guy. His life was tragically cut short in September 2012. Dodzy was one of the joint architects of the trail network in Wairoa Gorge and the Dodzy Memorial Enduro celebrates his vision, talent and contribution to New Zealand mountain biking. The grading system at Wairoa is your standard 5 grade system - they have grades 2-5. Be prepared for a higher level of riding than most other bike parks. Roots, rocks, and general Gnar. Sat 20 February 2016 - Coppermine Epic and Enduro - Nelson
Don't miss this one! Simply awesome. Mountainbike courses don't come better than this. The main race features 40km of Nelson’s epic mountain bike trails incorporating a loop of the stunning mineral belt. The loop starts in central Nelson and joins the historic Dun Mountain Rail Trail, a flowing gently inclined singletrack leading to a climb up the Classic to almost 900m to the top of Fringe Hill. Followed by the undulating Black Diamond Ridge single track through spectacular native bush. After rejoining the rail trail to complete the loop of the mineral belt with an 850m descent of the new challenge in descending; “Boulder valley”. There is also an easier option (but same distance) that avoids both the grunt up to the summit of Fringe Hill and Black Diamond Ridge. And new for 2014 sees an enduro option where you just get timed on the predominantly downhill sections. Entry numbers are restricted. Sat 20 - Sun 21 February 2016 - World 24 Hour Solo MTB Champs - Rotorua
After stopping off in Italy in 2012, Australia 2013, Scotland 2014, United States of America 2015, the WEMBO World Solo 24 hour Solo Mountain Bike Championship will again come back to the Southern Hemisphere. The excitement begins to build on the Friday 13th of February as the 4th Rotorua Bike Festival kicks off with over 30 events and will draw to a close with the World Solo 24 hour Solo Mountain Bike Championship. Sat 27 February 2016 - Mt Somers MTB Classic - Mt Somers
Three courses to cater for all abilities over Mt Somers Station, 35km Mountain Challenge,30km Foothills Race and the 20km Lowland ride. All races start and finish at the Mt Somers Domain followed by lunch that is included in the entry fee. This is the eleventh running of this event and is just over an hours drive from ChCh. Sun 28 Feb - Sat 5 Mar 2016 - Kiwi Crusade Stage Race - Bay of Plenty
This is the first ever North Island stage race and has been put together so that professional and amateur riders can compete on the same route, at the same time for the same prize money, or the best photos along the route. NZ's longest standing MTB event, having been run since mid 80's! Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti is one of NZ's premier endurance mountainbike events. Sat 5 March 2016 - Motatapu, Wanaka
50km very scenic ride in awesome countryside from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first seven kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm trail climbing gradually over undulating terrain, with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Depending on recent rainfall, rivers can be up to thigh deep. Heaps of info and entry forms are at www.motatapu.org.nz. This event fills up real fast so need to get in early.

Sat 19 March 2016 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is an awesome course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. The course is around 8km long. With a team of mates, work colleagues, school friends, or even the family, here is an event that is manageable by all. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of forest roads and single track riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems, based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. One of the most exciting MTB marathon events in Australia. The event traverses Wombat State Forest and private property with fast fire trail, forest riding and up to 50% flowing single track with absolutely no tarmac! More details at http://wombat100.com.au

Sat 16 April 2016 - Kaiteriteri 6 hour relay - Kaiteriteri MTB Park
6 Hours of fun riding through the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park. Enter solo if you dare, or in relay-style teams of 2-4. Laps take 20-30 min depending on fitness and ability, with the course suitable for those with basic MTB skills and above. There's a fun vibe to the event, with many in fancy dress. Spot prizes through the day. Categories: Solo Man, Solo Woman, Men, Women, Mixed, Workplace Challenge, Intermediate (Yr 7 & 8), High School (Yr 9-13). This is the first weekend of the April school holidays so more riders from the likes of Christchurch can easily head up to do it and take advantage of having a bit more time to enjoy the area. One of the most scenic MTB events in NZ. A once a year opportunity to race the full 125km circumference of Lake Hawea, near Wanaka (also 95km and 35km options). If you are ready to raise the bar then this event is for you. Whether you want to race hard or just take on the challenge and adventure of completing this event, you won’t be disappointed. Sat 28 May 2016 - Mt Isobel Challenge - Hanmer
A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain.
