Sun 16 October 05 - Nelson MTB Club MAMMOTH - Nelson
Suddenly there was loud crash and a huge grey hairy beast appeared out of the scrub. It looked vaguely like a prehistoric Elephant but had huge curved tusks, blood running from scratched knees and it showered the air with spray from the creek it had just crossed at speed…..Oh no it’s just a Mountain Bike rider on the annual Mammoth mountain bike race.
This is the 15th year we’ve run the Mammoth. This is not an easy race. In fact it’s arguably the toughest race we run and it’s not made easier by the fact that, because the track’s a guarded secret, you can’t plan or practise on it and when you start to race, don’t have a clue where you’re going.
Later I hear the animated chatter of survivors and abuse in my direction is interpreted as morbid compliment of a great day. (The meagre spot prizes bare no comparison to the effort involved.)
This years track is 35km and, although most riders know Hira forest quite well, it takes in 4.5 km of new single track that most riders don’t know exists. When revealed I’ve no doubt, it will not only provide a pleasant surprise, but a neat new track to ride.
Start and finish is at the Bike Park sign on Sharland’s Road. Entry forms are now at your favourite bike shop or at www.nelsonmountainbikeclub.org.nz. Postal entry now or Sign on race day from 8.30am for a start at 10am. For more info contact Bryce Buckland, 03 547 1554

Don't miss this one, especially if you are intending to race the national series event (round 3) held on the same course on 22 January 2006.
