Sun 11 January 04 - Social Ride - Blue Mountains, Geraldine
Canterbury Mountainbike Club social ride. Depart Yaldhurst Pub at 7.30 am - car pool from there. Ride Organiser is Cath Parr on 384-7188. A loop ride around the foothills of Geraldine. Generally follows 4WD farm tracks and a couple of river crossings thrown in too. While the riding time may be 4 hours we are usually out for 6 hours - at least 3 sandwiches and some extra food must be carried along with wet weather gear as the weather can change rapidly on this ride.

Sun 1 February 04 - Howes Brothers MTB Races - Fairlie
Two races, both starting and finishing at the Fairlie Domain.
The Farm track MTB race, for recreational to intermediate riders, is 22km of gravel road, farm 4wd and single track. Ford the mighty Opihi River and challenge yourself on an undulating 250m climb up a farm track, enjoy spectacular views of the Fairlie Basin and beyond. Then a superb farm track downhill and along the river track back to the Domain.
The Spur Rd/Bridle track MTB race, for more serious riders, is 35km and follows the Farm Track MTB for the first lap but then it’s back up a different track and a second climb to the top of the Brothers Range, another wild descent and back to the Domain.

The inaugural 24hrs of N-Duro™ MTB Race, will be held in the heat of summer from midday Saturday to midday Sunday in Whakawerawera Forest, Rotorua. Sun 15 February 04 - Kaiwara Klassic - North Canterbury
A 43km point-to-point adventure ride from Culverden to Cheviot. Riders travel up the gravel Kaiwara Rd to a high saddle, followed by an exciting descent into the picuresque Ethelton Valley, then a climb up the Random Spur Track through tussock covered hills with breathtaking views, and then a long descent to Mina Rd which is followed to Cheviot. NZ's longest standing MTB event, now in it's 19th year. Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, Karapoti is recognised as NZ's premier MTB event. A 2-day navigation event for teams of 2-4 riders that is in a different location each year (typically about 1 hour from Christchurch). Involves two longish days so you'll want to be reasonably fit, and have some basic map reading and navigation skills. But it need only be as hard as you make it - you are able to choose a route and pace that suits your skills and fitness. Entry is $120 per person. Limited to 350 riders. www.cyclicsaga.co.nz

Generally the landowner isn't that happy about having riders up there as he sees it as a walkway. He's had gates left open etc and is pretty annoyed with mountainbikers riding the track with out his permission, spooking livestock etc. He will let us do the ride, but please be aware that this track, as many have assumed, is not open to mountian bikers year round. Sun 4 April 04 - Mt Peel MTB Marathon - Mt Peel, Geraldine
The course is approx. 85km long and one of the toughest one day MTB events in New Zealand. Climbing to over 5000ft, the course includes about 10km of flat roads and one uphill portage (bike carry) of 20 mins through snowgrass. Undulating 4WD tracks give magnificent views of Mts. Cook and Tasman. A steep, rough descent to the Hewson and Orari Rivers follows before returning to Peel Forest via Blue Mountain Station and the low Scotsburn range. Total ascent-descent 2340M. Sun 4 April 04 - Blue Mountain Gorges Challenge - Mt Peel, Geraldine
Run in conjunction with the Mt Peel MTB Marathon but definitely less arduous. Approximately 55km long and covers some fantastic inland South Canterbury terrain, The route, incorporating 1000m of altitude gain and loss, leaves Peel Forest and follows the Orari Gorge to Lochaber Station. There the route joins the course of the marathon for its return to Peel Forest township via Andrews Stream. There are no major climbs although this is open to interpretation!. Up to 3 laps of a 13km XC loop, starting at the toll gate at Mt Dobson Ski Area, going up the access road for 6km with a climb of approx 300m to the first saddle, down over the back of the saddle onto farmland. There is approx 3km of rough 4WD track, some portages across streams, then onto a farm 4WD track for approx 4km. A lap takes 40 - 90 mins. 3-4 July 04 - NZ MTB Orienteering Championships - Waiuku Forest
Held at Waiuku Forest, just north of the Waikato River mouth (about 1hr from Auckland). There will be a middle distance (60min for the open men) event on the Saturday. The championship itself will be the long distance (120min for the open men) on the Sunday. Both events will be fixed-order events, and the NZOF Selectors are expected to announce that one or both will be selection trials for the World Champs in Australia in October. This will create exceptionally strong fields in the open classes. The terrain is pine forest on coastal sand dunes, with a height range of 150m, and a moderate track network from gravel road to single track. Entries close on 28 June. The actual course is kept secret until just before the start and will (in the Hanmer event) include mountainbike orienteering, foot orienteering and archery (all archery gear provided). To make it easy the course has been designed in a clover leaf pattern with all transistions happening in the same place to avoid the need for a support crew. Choice of either a [7.5km run + 20km MTB] or [7.5km run + 2.4km kayak + 20km MTB]. The run course is on a formed track through regenerated West Coast bush and old gold workings. The kayak course crosses Argyle Lake (just south of Charleston). The MTB course is on gravel road, highway, farm land, through old gold mine tunnels and includes a crossing of the Nile River. 25-26 September 04 - Fleet Cycles MTB Orienteering weekend - Hanmer
Andy Rhodes and Claire Heppenstall, through the Peninsula and Plains Orienteering Club, are organising what they promise to be an exciting weekend, both socially and competitively, of MTB orienteering. Saturday will be a point-to-point style event where you must take the controls (checkpoints) in the set order, fastest time wins. Sunday will be a “score” or “trailquest” event with a 2 hour time limit to get as many points as possible. Enjoy the exotic forest, twisty single track and fast forest roads. Help will be available on the day if you haven’t done a navigational style event before. Both events will have running/walking options as well. 20-21 November 04 - The Prophets Rock EPIC rogaine - Clyde
This event was cancelled and will hopefully go ahead during early spring 2005. A 24 hour foot rogaine with a twist - it will include a 20-25km mountain bike leg on gravel roads and farm tracks that will lead you in to a central transition zone. From there you can continue on foot into the stunning Central Otago tussock country. Once you've had your full of rocks, speargrass, streams and views you can return to collect your bike and enjoy a nice downhill bike home to the finish (gravel road and tarseal, 20km). The event duration will be right through the night so you can watch the good old sun rear it's lazy head up from the east on its way to another fantastic Central Otago day. Don't miss this one. A fantastic training course for those doing the National Series, especially considering there is a Christchurch round this year! Awesome coastal hill course with loads of purpose built bush singletrack. This years course will include last years 4.5km circuit (including a long new singletrack section) and also an additional circuit of approx. 3km which means laps are now 7.5km long and will take the fastest riders around 35min per lap. The new 3km section is a mix of 4WD and singletrack and is in a beautiful bush valley with awesome coastal views. It's back! A fantastic event that takes you up to the summit of four of Nelson's surrounding peaks. Open to individuals or team of 2 or 4 riders. Total of 1779m climbing over 42km and includes some of the best descents in Nelson. Average individual rider expected to take between 3 hrs 15 mins to 4 hrs 15 mins.
