Generally follows 4WD farm tracks and a couple of river crossings thrown in too. The Farm track MTB race, for recreational to intermediate riders, is 22km of gravel road, farm 4wd and single track. Ford the mighty Opihi River and challenge yourself on an undulating 250m climb up a farm track, enjoy spectacular views of the Fairlie Basin and beyond. Then a superb farm track downhill and along the river track back to the Domain. The Spur Rd/Bridle track MTB race, for more serious riders, is 35km and follows the Farm Track MTB for the first lap but then it’s back up a different track and a second climb to the top of the Brothers Range, another wild descent and back to the Domain. Riders travel up the gravel Kaiwara Rd to a high saddle, followed by an exciting descent into the picuresque Ethelton Valley, then a climb up the Random Spur Track through tussock covered hills with breathtaking views, and then a long descent to Mina Rd which is followed to Cheviot. But it need only be as hard as you make it - you are able to choose a route and pace that suits your skills and fitness. Entry is $120 per person. Climbing to over 5000ft, the course includes about 10km of flat roads and one uphill portage (bike carry) of 20 mins through snowgrass. Undulating 4WD tracks give magnificent views of Mts. Cook and Tasman. A steep, rough descent to the Hewson and Orari Rivers follows before returning to Peel Forest via Blue Mountain Station and the low Scotsburn range. Total ascent-descent 2340M. Sun 4 April 04 - Blue Mountain Gorges Challenge - Mt Peel, Geraldine Run in conjunction with the Mt Peel MTB Marathon but definitely less arduous. Approximately 55km long and covers some fantastic inland South Canterbury terrain, The route, incorporating 1000m of altitude gain and loss, leaves Peel Forest and follows the Orari Gorge to Lochaber Station. There the route joins the course of the marathon for its return to Peel Forest township via Andrews Stream. There are no major climbs although this is open to interpretation!. There will be a middle distance (60min for the open men) event on the Saturday. The championship itself will be the long distance (120min for the open men) on the Sunday. Both events will be fixed-order events, and the NZOF Selectors are expected to announce that one or both will be selection trials for the World Champs in Australia in October. This will create exceptionally strong fields in the open classes. The terrain is pine forest on coastal sand dunes, with a height range of 150m, and a moderate track network from gravel road to single track. Entries close on 28 June. Saturday will be a point-to-point style event where you must take the controls (checkpoints) in the set order, fastest time wins. From there you can continue on foot into the stunning Central Otago tussock country. Once you've had your full of rocks, speargrass, streams and views you can return to collect your bike and enjoy a nice downhill bike home to the finish (gravel road and tarseal, 20km).
