Both start and finish at the Fairlie Domain. Overnight, you stay at the old Bannockburn School (bunkrooms and camping). Travel is on roads, 4WD tracks, and untracked tussock country. Teams of 2 to 4 riders. Variation from standard navigation events by having cryptic clues. www.epicnavigation.com/ Sun 16 February 03 - Mountainbike orienteering fun day - Bottlelake A Christchurch City Council fun day (ie. NOT a race) organised by Peninsula and Plains Orienteers. They are organsing a fixed course (ie. not a score event) designed to get people interested in MTBO and orienteering in general. Entry is free. Head along if you have never given MTBO a go or even if you just want to become a little more familiar with it. Staggered starts available 11am to 12.30pm. Sun 16 February 03 - Kaiwara Classic - North Canterbury A new 45km point-to-point adventure race from Culverden to Cheviot. $30, includes lunch. Entry forms in bike shops now. An adventure race through the fantastic scenic Flockhill Station. 30km, 45km and 60km loop courses on mostly undulating 4WD tracks. Contact Stu at Hornby Cycles, Phone 349 3372. Great event with an awesome post-race lunch. 22 January to 26 February 03 - Twilight Series - Bottlelake Wednesday evenings for 6 consecutive weeks. http://www.bluedogevents.co.nz/ 1-2 March 03 - Goldfields Classic - Otago A 2-day event that starts and finishes in Berwick staying the Sat night at Lawrence. 70km each day using mostly roads with some tracks. $135, entry forms in bike shops now. http://www.goldfieldsclassic.co.nz/ Sun 2 March 03 - Karapoti Classic - Lower Hutt NZ's longest standing MTB event, now in it's 18th year. A very popular 50km loop adventure race just north of Wellington. Entry in most categories is $50. Entry forms in bike shops now. Contact The Cyclery at Timaru Sat 29 March 03 - Le Race - Christchurch to Akaroa A 100km point-to-point race all on sealed roads but has heaps of hills and is popular with some mountainbikers. As they are at night, you will need a good light (preferably fixed to your helmet) for these events. 1 hour score events. $10 per event or $25 for all three (paid on first night). For more details click here http://www.dunedinorienteering.com/ Saturday 4 October 2003 iRULE Trailquest This event was cancelled in 2003 Carter Holt Harvey Forest, Hanmer Springs Event 1 of the Canterbury House MTBmedley series The feedback following a similar event in 2002 was "more, more, more!" So make sure you don't miss out this year. This type of event is great fun. The navigation side of the race is easy. Basically it is an opportunity to ride in a great location with you choosing the course, pace and length of time you want to ride (2, 3 and 5 hour options available). Last year's two courses have been improved with far less gravel and heaps more 4WD - now 55km (2150m climbing) and 35km (1300m of climbing), and with the addition of a third easier 23km (650m climbing) course. A great event for climbers - the 39km course that is a mix of singletrack, 4WD and rough gravel roads, climbs four of the local peaks of Nelson, totalling to around 1500m. www.dirtbike.net.nz/4peaks Sun 21 December 03 - Social ride - Craigieburn Canterbury Mountainbike Club social ride. Meet at Yaldhurst Pub, 8.15am Ride Organiser - Darren on 382-1011. Ride up the ski field access road, and then cutting across the lower slopes of the skifield, past the trendy wee ski field huts, across some scree slopes and coming back down the other side of the spur through some splendid beech forest single track. A small amount of fitness is required for the climb (imagine grovelling up the steep part of Rapaki for an hour), and some single track skills required for the descent (otherwise it’s quite a walk). Even if it’s cold, bring insect repellent in addition to the usual essential equipment remembering there’s a good chance that there will still be snow up there.
