The main race will be a 2 lap event, taking in tracks throughout the whole of the park. Sun 6 April 08 - Mt Peel MTB Marathon - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This is a fantastic event for anyone looking for a seriously challenging ride. The course is 85km long and easily one of the toughest one day MTB events in New Zealand. Climbing to over 1500m, the course includes about 10km of flat roads but most of it is on 4WD tracks which allow magnificent views of the Southern Alps. About an hour is spent on a very exposed ridgeline before a steep, rocky descent to the Hewson and Orari Rivers, then returning to Peel Forest via Blue Mountain Station and the low Scotsburn range. There is over 2340m of climbing (mostly in one big very long climb!), so This is NOT A RACE FOR NOVICES! For more info, phone 03 688 5531 or head to www.mtpeelmtb.co.nz.

Sun 6 April 08 - Blue Mountain Gorges Challenge - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This course is simply awesome. It is a true adventure that will challenge riders of any ability. With fast gravel, grunty climbs, rough 4WD tracks, numerous river crossings, open grass flats, it simply has it all and is a must-do course for anyone who enjoys challenging adventure courses. This event is run in conjunction with the Mt Peel MTB Marathon but is less arduous. It's around 65km long and covers some fantastic inland South Canterbury terrain. The route, incorporating over 1000m of altitude gain and loss, leaves Peel Forest and follows the Orari Gorge to Lochaber Station. There the route joins the course of the marathon for its return to Peel Forest township via Andrews Stream. There are no major climbs but is very undulating. The course is ideal for intermediate to expert riders who have a few technical skills. For more info, phone 03 688 5531 or head to www.mtpeelmtb.co.nz.

Sun 4 May 08 - Mountainbike orienteering event - Mt Kerutu, North Canterbury
First event in the 2008 MTBO Series. New map: Mount Karetu. Travel directions: From Christchurch head out on the main road through Rangiora and on through Loburn towards Whiterock. Where the road becomes a gravel road continue straight on, past signs for Okuku Pass Road. At the bottom of Okuku Pass instead of following Okuku Pass Road into the hills continue straight on into Horsford Downs station, where the parking is in the Paddock to the right. Registration is in the woolshed. It takes almost exactly one hour to drive there from Christchurch. Rego from 8:30 am, briefing is at 9:30 am, start 10 am. The event is a 4 hour rogaine. Entry fee $20 ($10 for juniors). You may compete individually or in a team. Terrain description: The area is in the foothills, and is undulating/ hilly but 80-90% rideable. Most of the riding is on gravel roads, with some smaller tracks and farmland included. A number of controls have been set off-tracks and you may leave your bike and fetch these on foot if you wish. Safety notes/ compulsory gear: The area (as the map name suggests) includes the top of Mount Karetu and is high and exposed in places. The weather can be wintery in May. There is also extensive gorse in parts of the area. Full body cover (polypro top and leggings) are compulsory and we advise you to wear them! You must also carry a waterproof/ windproof top, hat, long-fingered gloves (again you probably want to wear these against the gorse) and a survival blanket. There is very patchy cell-phone coverage and none at Horsford Downs so you must carry a whistle to attract help in the event of an accident. We advise at least 2 spare tubes per person and a first aid kit. You will also want food and drink for 4 hours, there are a few streams in the areas which the planner has tried without ill-effects, but this is at your own risk- probably best just to carry a full bladder! You must report to the finish even if you are retiring. IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL IF YOU WOULD LET CLAIRE HEPPENSTALL KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO TAKE PART SO SHE CAN PREPARE THE CORRECT NUMBER OF MAPS.

Sat 18 October 08 - Women's Adventure Duathalon - Hanmer Springs
This brand new event is aimed at beginner adventurers, keen to try their hand at an off road event. Two courses have been planned, for beginners, a 5km run followed by a 12km mountain bike ride, and for the more advanced, a 10km run followed by a 26km mountain bike ride. Both run and bike routes are on forest roads, therefore not of a technical nature. There are gentle up hill sections, with corresponding non technical downhills. The routes weave through the Matariki Forest to the east of Hanmer Springs, with start, finish and transition all being in the vicinity of the main forest gates on Jacks Pass road. Officials who planned the routes have made a special effort to make them as scenic as possible, with subtle challenges through out the course, not too difficult to be off putting, but sufficient to test the fitness and skills of competitors. The New Zealand Breast Cancer Association will benefit from the race, part of the entry fee being donated to the Pink Ribbon Appeal. For entry forms email neil@krankdirtwear.com. Entry fee $50.

Sat 29 November 08 - Kekerengu Moa Hunt - Kekerengu
Moa Beer Moa Hunt is in its second year after attracting 500 riders to the inaugural event in 2007. The start/finish venue is at the famed Kekerengu Store right next to the Pacific Ocean on SH1 just north of Kaikoura. The 40km course takes in some spectacular coastal and high country farm scenery. You climb to just over 500m above sea level to enjoy magnificent vistas of the coastline stretched below. This year will see the introduction of a shorter course for beginners. Steve Gurney said " "The inaugural Moa Hunt mountain bike ride was a stunner! In true Halligan fashion it was superbly organized with plenty of personality and character to the event. Technically, it's a very achievable event, perfect for newbies at mountain biking, although you'll need some fitness to get up the first hill. Just select an easy gear and grind for 40 mins. The stunning views of Tapuae-o-uenuku are definitely "earned" but you won't be disappointed as that majestic mountain dominates the track from there on. The down-hill is something to write home about and I couldn't resist getting some air on the roll-overs, yee har!" The event is limited to 1000 entries and the organisers can promise on an awesome goody bag and over $50,000 in prizes and give aways including two high end Giant XC bikes and overseas trips. Entry is $90. More info at www.moahunt.co.nz.
