Round one of our low-key series of 6 hillclimbs on the Port Hills, designed as a training leadup to our Mt Evans event on Saturday 24 February. Entry is free. Full details and maps are available at www.mountainbike.orcon.net.nz, or you can call Craig and Rebekah on 980 9432.

Sun 14 January 07 - National XC Series round 1 - Coronet Peak
Circuit length 5.5km, 270m climb per lap, start/finish is at Coronet Peak Base building. Starting at the Coronet Peak base building, the course heads up a wide and gradual incline onto the beginner slope. Superb views out the right hand window as we continue to climb gradually up the beginner slope before hooking into a section built from an existing farm track although now feeling more like single track and carrying you through the tussock and native vegetation. Quickly through this section you pop back out onto what in the winter is a groomed trail and push the last short stretch to the second highest point in the course. Then you follow a dirt track, meandering across the contour towards the short final push for the summit. From the high point of the course you zig and zag your way down through the Rocky Gully region, criss-crossing the T Bar line on a combination of single track and dirt road. Some fast flowing downhill is interspersed with flat sections and the odd short up hill to keep it interesting. The course eventually joins the new, purpose built perimeter single track running back to the base building, parallel to but below the beginner slope. At the base the course dives under the building itself to keep an element of "urban" in there and for maximum spectator action. A gentle downhill gradient to the base of the Greengates Chair round about and then back up to the start of the building. Texture is dry schist and fairly loose under wheel, assuming no rain. Sat 20 January 07 - The Intrigue - Coromandel Peninsula
The White Star Intrigue is more than just a MTB race, it is an adventure on your mountainbike in some of the remotest back country of the Coromandel Peninsula. This years event has 3 races catering for differing levels of ability and fitness:
The Epic - 53km with two stages (24km and 29km) – starts in Coromandel township - 1st stage finishes at White Star Station, 2nd stage finishes in Coromandel Township. Can be raced as an individual, tandem team or relay team of 2. Technically and physically challenging
The Challenge - 44km with two Stages (20km and 24km) – starts in Coromandel township – 1st stage finishes at White Star Station, 2nd stage finishes in Coromandel township. Can be raced as an individual, tandem team or relay team of 2. A notch down from the Epic in terms of the technical and physical challenge, however still, like the name suggests, a great challenge.
The Apprentice - 20km with just one Stage (starts and finishes at the White Star Station). An ideal ride for those wishing to experience a shorter off road race in some stunningly beautiful terrain. This is raced as an individual rider.

The 110km course heads through the spectacular Southern Alps, past the Mavora Lakes, to the shores of Lake Wakatipu, then follows the shores of the Lake to the Greenstone River and around to Glenorchy. It uses a mixture of gravel road and farm track. Important Notice: The middle section of this ride is on private land. It is only open for riding on the day of the event. Sun 25 March 07 - Mt Peel MTB Marathon - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This is a fantastic event for anyone looking for a seriously challenging ride. The course is 85km long and easily one of the toughest one day MTB events in New Zealand. Climbing to over 1500m, the course includes about 10km of flat roads and one uphill portage (bike carry) of about 20-30 mins through alpine snowgrass. Most of the course is on 4WD tracks which allow magnificent views of the Southern Alps. About an hour is spent on a very exposed ridgeline before a steep, rocky descent to the Hewson and Orari Rivers, then returning to Peel Forest via Blue Mountain Station and the low Scotsburn range. There is over 2340m of climbing (mostly in one big very long climb!), so This is NOT A RACE FOR NOVICES! For more info, phone 03 688 5531k or head to www.specialevents.co.nz.

Sun 25 March 07 - Blue Mountain Gorges Challenge - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This course is simply awesome. It is a true adventure that will challenge riders of any ability. With fast gravel, grunty climbs, rough 4WD tracks, numerous river crossings, open grass flats, it simply has it all and is a must-do course for anyone who enjoys challenging adventure courses. This event is run in conjunction with the Mt Peel MTB Marathon but is less arduous. It's around 65km long and covers some fantastic inland South Canterbury terrain. The route, incorporating over 1000m of altitude gain and loss, leaves Peel Forest and follows the Orari Gorge to Lochaber Station. There the route joins the course of the marathon for its return to Peel Forest township via Andrews Stream. There are no major climbs but is very undulating. The course is ideal for intermediate to expert riders who have a few technical skills. For more info, phone 03 688 5531k or head to www.specialevents.co.nz.

Fri 6 - Sun 8 April 07 - The Odyssey - Whakatane to Taupo
The Whakatane, Rotorua and Taupo District Councils and New Zealand’s national cycling organisation BikeNZ have teamed up to create the “Odyssey”, a new three day recreational mountain bike tour. The Odyssey will start in Whakatane, and include the Rotorua Lakes and hills and finish in Taupo. Odyssey loosely means an epic journey and is the perfect word for the new 3-day mountain bike event that will take riders from Whakatane to Taupo along some spectacular unseen tracks that will, like an odyssey, challenge participants to reach new limits and explore untouched territory. The Whakatane-Taupo Odyssey will be both a race and “fun” ride. The 300 plus kilometers of mountain biking will be tackled over three days, with riders and crews planned to bed-down in two carefully selected water-side camp sites. It will take in Matahina, the hills behind Kaweraua, and the Rotorua Lakes, before heading south to the Great Lake. The Odyssey will welcome both individuals and teams and there will be event mechanical support. “There’s a massive area of awesome mountain biking and stunning scenery between Whakatane and Taupo,” said Nicola Burgess of the Whakatane District Council. “A lot of that riding is usually pretty inaccessible - the Odyssey will be the ideal way to discover it.” Riding around many of the Rotorua lakes, and dozens of kilometers of bush trails will make the Odyssey an incredible outdoors experience, she said. “Of course, if you want to ignore the view and race full-on, you’ve got 300 kilometres to give it heaps!” More info at www.bikeodyssey.co.nz

From here catch stunning views of Mt Cook, Mt Tasman, and the Southern Alps as well as Lake Tekapo and surrounds. Start a very long (22km) and gradual descent on rough 4WD tracks. Gain an appreciation of the High Country as you mountainbike along the foot of the Two Thumb Range, past Wee McGregor a 1138m mini mountain, high country tarns and streams on an improving track and surface back to the 'Pines'. This 40km ride is expected to take between 2 & 5 hours depending on fitness and ability. Sun 9 December 07 - Arrowsmith Thee Ride/South Is Cup round 1 - Lake Heron
Round one of the new South Island Cup (formerly the National Series). A 42km course on the very scenic Mt Arrowsmith Station, Lake Heron, Canterbury (just tucked in behind Mt Somers). The course heads up the Cameron Valley, nearly to the source of the river, up and over a high saddle, down into the South Ashburton Valley and then back down to the finish via a long undulating valley ride and a small saddle. The course uses rough 4WD tracks and involves a couple of decent climbs, the first of which is reasonably steep in places and quite long, and also a very cool boulder scree crossing. Stunning mountain location with fantastic close-up views of the South Ashburton and Cameron Glaciers and Southern Alps. Contact Simon Hampton at methvenrace@xtra.co.nz, or by phone on 03 302 1822 or 027 274 6573. This is an awesome adventure course and should be on every rider's to-do list! They also have a smaller recreational course this year for family, supporters or recreational riders (see website for details). Pre-entry closes on 30 November. More details, entry form, course map, photos etc are on their new website: www.arrowsmithmtb.ashburtononline.co.nz.

Sun 9 December 08 - Tour de Peak - Makara Peak, Wellington
As with previous years there will be the Creek to Peak relay in the morning where teams of two do a lap each of the 'Grand Loop' (minus Upper Ridgeline). Then in the afternoon it is onto the Tour de Peak where riders have to ride every track in the park in any order they want. The hardcore 'Open' is going up a notch in order to stick to the 'ride every trail in the park' mantra. That is going to mean the Possum Track is included (as a climb) and there is also the possibility of one or two other tracks being used (depends on volunteer turn out during the winter and spring months). Either way the Open is going to be a tougher challenge this year for sure! More info later at www.makarapeak.org.nz
