RaboPlus NZ MTB XC Cup Round 1 - Living Springs, Christchurch

Round 1 of the nationals is on our Living Springs trail network! This full day of events has opportunities for all riders, not just the elite. More details are now on our club website... www.singletrack.org.nz. Note that the event village will be at the Living Springs Farm Park (down on the main road) and the course is likley to be around 6.5 km in length, which will include the 4km circuit used in the March 2009 race, as well as more new singletrack and some existing trails to link in with the Farm Park. It's going to be a great weekend! For those keen for some extra spectator action the DH will be held at Living Springs on the Friday and Saturday of the same weekend. The XC course travels through a mix of native bush, pine forest and open farmland and will be about 60% singletrack and 40% 4WD track. There is a flat to gradual climb of about 750 m, then a steep climb of 200 m, all on open farmland. The next 4 km is mostly on singletrack, before a fast 4WD blast out to the event village. The course begins in a grassy laneway which it follows for about 100 m before entering a paddock and beginning a very gradual climb under willow trees to the far side of the paddock. The course turns sharply right and ascends between a row of trees and a fence – the surface is a bit rooty in places. Riders cross an old wooden bridge and climb up and over a grassy spur which brings them to the bottom of the steep (250 m long) grassy 4WD climb up to the Pines. Once in the Pines you climb for just over 1km on singletrack. When you exit the Pines you continue on singletrack (Rhymes with Orange) through regenerating kanuka. This spits you out on a 4WD track (sharp turn right) where you will be able to easily pass others for 100 m or so. Goodie Gumdrop is a 400 m singletrack loop that climbs across an open paddock to the highest point of the course then descends through a stand of gum trees. The course follows the outside perimeter of the Outdoor Camping Centre then rejoins the singletrack and the long descent begins. Initially it winds down the Mississippi through kanuka forest (500 m), then it crosses a spur (620 m) into Zane’s, a 1.2 km long section that descends in native forest with frequent bends (some of them sharp), a couple of rocky creek crossings and several wooden bridges. Riders with good bike handling skills will be rewarded on Zane’s. At the bottom of Zane's elite riders will do a couple of extra small loops - one includes a stream crossing and steep stream exit, the other a short sharp climb followed by a steep drop into a 'canyon'. Once out of Zane’s you come on to Skoolz Out (300 m), an open wider piece of track that may be bumpy in places from cattle treading. At the end of Skoolz Out you will find yourself at the bottom of the climb to the Pines but you turn right and continue your descent to the Farm Park on a fast grassy, then dirt, then gravelled, 4WD track . The lap finishes with a circuit of the pig paddock, past the timing caravan, around the back of the Farm Park kitchen and back into the laneway that you started on. To enter and get more details head to www.mtbnz.org

Sat 16 January 2010 - RaboPlus NZ MTB XC Cup Round 2 - Forrester Park, Dunedin
The course is similar to the one used for nationals in 2007. The event village is at Forrester park. 6.5km long loop. Riders start on the soccer ground in Forrester Park then loop behind the dog club and up to the start finish on the upper soccer fields. From here a singletrack descends then climbs through the trees. A lap through the BMX track then you cross the road, and after a small drop, head onto the main climb on a wide gravel road. At the top you turn right into the Haggis Hunter for a tight & fast single track down to the head of Bethunes Gully. After crossing the footbridge, there’s a steep singletrack climb up the other side of the valley. Some well burmed corners lead off the top of the hill before the track steepens and takes you back to the head of the Gully. A short section of gravel road then turn left into a new singletrack which climbs then descends down the gully. Just after a boardwalk turn left and climb up to the skid site before exiting onto the road. Ride down to the gate and on the left then take the single track back to Forrester Park and complete the lap. To enter and get more details head to www.mtbnz.org

Sat 23 January 2010 - RaboPlus NZ MTB XC Cup Round 3 - Nelson
The Codgers Trail Network is a great riding asset for Nelson. These trails can be ridden fast or slow and provide a fun package for all. The 2010 race course uses the best of the trails, with a grunty climb up Jacks thrown in for good measure. NZ MTB Cup racers get to utilise the full length of Fireball this year in the direction it really shines – down! No rest on this course, and racers will have to be on their game to do well here. To enter and for more details head along to www.mtbnz.org

Sat 23 - Sun 24 January 2010 - Activate8 - Lake Crackenback Resort, NSW,
Unfortunately this event was cancelled due to insuffcient entrants. Huw and the team fell in love with Lake Crackenback when planning their Mountains To Beach event and resolved to return with a standalone event. Not only is the riding there a load of fun, the options for accommodation and other activities makes it the perfect location for Activate8; an 8 part event that will test the full range of mountain biking skills (plus a few others!). Ride it solo, as a pair or as a threesome. The team at Lake Crackenback Resort have a real can-do attitude. They will have special accommodation packages for participants. There’s plenty to do at the resort apart from riding. From luxuriating in the Day Spa, to kayaking on the lake or even a round of golf! So bring family and friends! Activate8 is a very cool format with 8 different activities over the 2 days (first 7 on Sat, 8th on Sun):
- Aqua bike (TT in pedal boats on Lake Crackenback),
- Criterium (a timed lap of 300m skills course),
- Trials (easy trials course),
- In the Water (timed bike carry involving water),
- Velocity (TT for 1km on staionary trainer),
- Assembly (starting with wheels off, seatpost out, pedals off and short ride of your built bike),
- Two laps (Timed two laps of the MTB track),
- Enduro (6hr lap race).

Sat 3 April 2010 - Tour de Wakatipu - Arrowtown
This new mountainbike challenge will provide exclusive access through Coneburn Station alongside the Kawarau River and conclude with a function at Chard Farm winery. Southern Traverse Director Geoff Hunt says the 45km event will appeal to mountainbikers of all levels and was born out of the idea of staging a fun, but challenging race through the Wakatipu, incorporating two lakes, two rivers and new tracks recently developed by the Wakatipu Trails Trust. The event begins in the Arrowtown / Millbrook Resort area and follows a course to gain access to the newly gazetted Wakatipu Trails Trust tracks, across Speargrass Flat Road and on to Slopehill Road. This leads to the scenic single track alongside the Shotover River and across the restored Lower Shotover Bridge. The course then follows a gravel road and 4WD track to the Shotover delta, before joining the Kawarau River track and crossing the Kawarau River bridge, at the exit point of Lake Wakatipu. A one kilometre highway section accesses the scenic and private Kawarau River road on Coneburn Station and the gentle undulating ride leads to the finish line at Chard Farm. "The ride is for both elite and recreational competitors, and from the front of the field there will be intense competition, as these athletes race to finish the event in around two to three hours. The recreational bikers will take anything up to five hours," says Hunt. "It has some fantastic elements and in particular it is a great opportunity for people to ride the private Kawarau River road which has never been opened up to an event before." Sun 11 April 2010 - Mt Peel MTB Marathon - Mt Peel, Geraldine
This is a fantastic event for anyone looking for a seriously challenging ride. The course is 85km long and easily the toughest single day MTB course in New Zealand. Climbing to over 1500m, the course includes about 10km of flat roads but most of it is on 4WD tracks which allow magnificent views of the Southern Alps. About an hour is spent on a very exposed ridgeline before a steep, rocky descent to the Hewson and Orari Rivers, then returning to Peel Forest via Blue Mountain Station and the low Scotsburn range. There is over 2340m of climbing (mostly in one big very long climb!), so This is NOT A RACE FOR NOVICES! For more info, phone 03 688 5531 or head to www.mtpeelmtb.co.nz.

Sun 11 April 2010 - Blue Mountain Gorges Challenge - Mt Peel, Geraldine

With fast gravel, grunty climbs, rough 4WD tracks, numerous river and stream crossings, open grass flats, it simply has it all and is a must-do course for anyone who enjoys challenging adventure courses. This event is run in conjunction with the Mt Peel MTB Marathon but is less arduous. It's around 65km long and covers some fantastic inland South Canterbury terrain. The route, incorporating over 1000m of altitude gain and loss, leaves Peel Forest and follows the Orari Gorge to Lochaber Station. There the route joins the course of the marathon for its return to Peel Forest township via Andrews Stream. There are no major climbs but is very undulating. The course is ideal for intermediate to expert riders who have a few technical skills. For more info, phone 03 688 5531 or head to www.mtpeelmtb.co.nz.

Sun 16 May 2010 - Night MTB-orienteering training - McLeans Forest
A MTBO training session for first timers or experienced MTBOers. Registration from 5:45pm with riders or groups starting at 1 minute intervals from then on. Course closure is 7:30pm. Basic instruction will be available for those new to orienteering. You will be looking for small reflective controls (which stand out remarkable well when you have a good helmet light!) marked with a single-letter code. A pencil may be needed to record the codes. The course will generally follow the MTB singletrack (without Coringa loop) with a few small deviations. Map is similar to that used for the MTBO short course on 10th March. Fastest riders can expect to complete the course in less than 40 minutes. What to bring: Mountainbike, helmet with a good night light. $2 for a map. A map board or some means of carrying your map is very useful (even just an icecream container lid cable tied to your handlebar stem using a couple of slits in the middle of it, then put a big bulldog clip on the top of it and you have an instand mapboard!). A small backup torch is worth having if your main light fails. While most riders don't worry about a compass (as you are always on a track and teh navigation is pretty easy) you may want one if you are likley to get lost as it may help you keep track of where you are on the map. Registration, start and finish will be at the main Forest Park picnic area off McLeans Island Road opposite Orana Park. We may have to park outside the gate. Special Note: PLEASE advise Graeme Read (gr.read@gmail.com) by 11th May if you are planning to take part so he can prepare the correct number of maps. Graeme is also available for any queries, ph 352 2582.

This month: meet at Evans Pass, walk up to the series of switchbacks on Greenwood Park above the cattle grid – about 10mins walk in.
