The Christchurch Singletrack Club are running a second series of short cross country races this season on 2 mid-week evenings for CSC club members. Short course multi-lap format using the C2-Crocodile-Deviation-Lower Deviation loop (approx 2.2 km, taking 6-12 minutes). The Pioneer is an awe-inspiring seven day MTB teams stage race through NZ’s pristine Southern Alps. The first race of its kind to link together over 500 km of farm tracks, NZ Cycle Trails, double track and singletrack riding in a very special part of the world where soaring mountain peaks, crystal-clear blue lakes, and golden high country await. There is also a 4-day solo option for those who do not want to tackle the full event. Although a shortened version, the 4-day "Traverse" will still prove to be mentally and physically demanding with 8,718m of climbing across the 314km of riding. Tuesday evening 7 February 2017 - Port Hills Hillclimb Series, C2-Upper Crocodile-Kennedys Track, Christchurch
Annual three race series organised by the Christchurch Singletrack Club. While two of the events in this year's series are being run through our Strava Club, this one up Kennedys will be run in the usual way. Open to ALL riders and entry is by gold coin donation. Sat 11 February 2017 - Coppermine Epic - Nelson
10th Year Anniversary Event in 2017. Don't miss this one! Simply awesome. Mountainbike courses don't come better than this. The main race features 40km of Nelson’s epic mountain bike trails incorporating a loop of the stunning mineral belt. The loop starts in central Nelson and joins the historic Dun Mountain Rail Trail, a flowing gently inclined singletrack leading to a climb up the Classic to almost 900m to the top of Fringe Hill. Followed by the undulating Black Diamond Ridge single track through spectacular native bush. After rejoining the rail trail to complete the loop of the mineral belt with an 850m descent of the new challenge in descending; “Boulder valley”. There is also an easier option (but same distance) that avoids both the grunt up to the summit of Fringe Hill and Black Diamond Ridge. Entry numbers are restricted. Sat 18 February 2017 - 4X2 MTB relay - Timaru
A 4 hour relay for solo or teams of 2 riders on a 4.5 km course. Race is 2-6pm with prize giving to follow. Held in Centennial Park, Timaru, with a campsite right in the middle of the course. Undulating terrain, a few sharp but short climbs, some tight corners, fast straights – nothing overly technical – just perfect for longer races and suitable for all levels of mountainbikers, from beginners to World Champions. 45 minutes from Christchurch, 981 Dalethorpe Rd, Sheffield. The opportunity to ride over some of the great country the Sheffield community has to offer, riding over three privately owned farms. This is a 25km race for the young and the young at heart! Riding through paddocks, 4WD tracks, and weaving through tussock country. Sat 25 February 2017 - Ruapehu Express - Central Plateau
A classic 55km XC point to point race/ride mostly across private land with exclusive access for this event only! Riders start on the Tukino Ski field Road and will be treated to a huge variety of terrain and trails including leg 1: NZ Army tussock/desert landscape LAV tracks, leg 2: the myriad of trails in the Karioi pine forest which wraps around the Whangaehu and Wahianoa Rivers, leg 3: the beautiful native Rangataua forest, leg 4: a smattering of farm land and quick dash to Ohakune on the tar sealed roads. There is also a shorter 21km course for those wanting a shorter challenge. Riders start mid way though the Karioi forest, then wind their way through the Rangataua native forest ending with a glide down to the finish line at Ohakune. www.ruapehuexpress.co.nz

Sat 4 March 2017 - Quartzopolis Challenge - Reefton, West Coast
Organised by the Westland MTB Club. A 38km course that goes from Reefton to the historic township of Waiuta, via Big River mine – 50% historic road, 40% pack track, 10% grunt/carry. www.reefton.co.nz. They are also on Facebook here. In 2016 they are also having a helibike the following day on Kirwins Track. More info about that on the Reefton website also.
Sat 4 March 2017 - Motatapu, Wanaka
A 47km scenic ride from Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, to the historic and beautiful Arrowtown. The first few kilometres are on gravel road, then you continue up the Motatapu Valley on a well maintained farm track climbing gradually over undulating terrain with several small stream crossings, until topping out at 887m when you reach the 35km mark. The course descends gently until it reaches a steep, rocky descent down the Soho Creek into the famous Macetown track. There are several river crossings over the last 8km on a gravel track. Sat 18 March 2017 - Hanmer 4 and 8 hour MTB event - Hanmer Springs
Perfect for all Canterbury riders! This is an awesome course for this race format - uses some of Hanmer's great singletrack but still not too demanding for those doing solo. With a team of mates, work colleagues, school friends, or even the family, here is an event that is manageable by all. With a team of up to four riders, or you could go solo, with a mixture of double track and singletrack riding, what a way to spent an Autumn day in Hanmer Springs. You have the choice of riding for 4 or 8 hours. The whole event will be run in daylight, so no need for expensive lighting systems, based out of the Forest Camp grounds, so great facilities and plenty of space to enjoy the MTB Village atmosphere, with time in the evening to enjoy the other delights of Hanmer Springs. Sat 25 March 2017 - Arrowsmith Thee Ride - Lake Heron
A 42km course on the very scenic Mt Arrowsmith Station, Lake Heron, Canterbury (just tucked in behind Mt Somers). The course heads up the Cameron Valley, nearly to the source of the river, up and over a high saddle, down into the South Ashburton Valley and then back down to the finish via a long undulating valley ride and a small saddle. The course uses rough 4WD tracks and involves a couple of decent climbs, the first of which is reasonably steep in places and quite long, and also a very cool boulder scree crossing. Stunning mountain location with fantastic close-up views of the South Ashburton and Cameron Glaciers and Southern Alps. Sat 1 April 2017 - Naseby 12 Hour Challenge - Naseby
Now in it's 11th year. Start/finish area is at the Larchview Campground, Naseby. 9am till 9pm. Entry normally about $75 per person (solo or team). The normal 10 (ish) km course includes heaps of sweet singletrack and some forestry roads. More details available at www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz. 43km of adventure mountainbiking from Culverden to Cheviot via the Lowry Peaks Range, Kaiwara Saddle, Ethelton Valley and the Random Spur. They offer 2 course options: the traditional ‘Challenge’ course; or the 'Epic' course option for those who wish to race harder for longer. The epic course continues climbing from Kaiwara Saddle to the tops along rough farm track before re-joining the challenge course at the end of the Ethelton Valley. This adds 30 mins to the riding time. Organised by the Cheviot Lions with proceeds going to fund local community projects. Three rides available from Colville at the remote northern end of the Coromandel Peninsula:
- The signature event the 72km Le Originale - a tough marathon ride with heaps of climbing, spectacular views, spectacular descents.
- The 40km Short and Stout - a technical challenging ride but shorter than the big one
- The 24km Flowrider - This honey of a ride is designed for those who want a day out on the bike but something not too tough. Its 100% rideable, offers a mix of non technical singletrack, farm tracks and gravel roads - and the chance of a swim at beautiful Waikawau Bay.

An event for all ages and capabilities, making it a great day out for all the family. It includes a 25km course (600m climbing) and a 10km course, that include private forestry tracks and farm tracks with challenging hill climbs, great downhills and a view that makes it all worthwhile. The Whitehorse Big Easy will encompass three separate events: MTB, walk/run and the Whitehorse Challenge which is a 'Bike and Run' event where teams raise money for charity, and then compete against each other to win the inaugural challenge! All of the courses are loop tracks, starting and ending at the Waimate A&P Showgrounds. There will be camping available at the Waimate A&P Showgrounds on the Saturday night before the event. The Port Hills Classic was first organised 30 years ago and is thought to be the second proper MTB event in NZ. To celebrate, we have planned a weekend of events on the Port Hills. One of these will be the annual Port Hills Classic event - this uses all of the great singletrack on the van Asch property, as well as tracks normally unavailable to the public. Starts and finish at Halswell Quarry. Events for the whole family and several disciplines. As well as the main Port Hills Classic XC event, there is going to be a cyclocross race, hillclimb, enduro, sprint XC race, kids races, outdoor movie and more. Keep following the website for up to date information. The enduro will be organised by Gravity Canterbury. All other events will be organised by the Christchurch Singletrack Club who build and maintain the Halswell trail network that these events are using. A superb mountain duathlon in the beautiful mountain setting of Hanmer Springs, involving a fantastic 8km 1000m ascent mountain run up to the summit of Mt Isobel and down to Jacks Pass, then a 22km mountainbike ride around the gravel road alongside the Clarence River and back over Jollies Pass and through the forest back to where you started at the Hanmer Domain. Sun 4 June 2017 - RRR Mountain Bike Challenge - Cairns
Part of the week-long Cairns Adventure Festival. Even before Cairns hosted the 1996 MTB World Championships, The iconic Triple RRR (Rural, Rainforest & Reef) cross country event was in its 5th year. The Triple R mountain bike race is the longest running 'point to point' race in Australia. First run in 1991 the race has run consecutively for over 25 years. A very popular event over the holiday period that takes you into the hills of Bannockburn (just down the road from Queenstown). Three courses to choose from:
Classic ride - 35km of gravel roads and undulating 4WD tracks with a climb of about 600m. Ride time of 1hr 30min - 3hrs
Sport ride - 22km of gravel roads and 4WD tracks with a climb of 350m. Ride time of 45min - 1hr 45min
