Vulcaniser Riding Session

Saturday 27 March 2010

We are having an organised riding session at the Vulcaniser Course on Saturday 27 March.

St John will be in attendance from 10.30 am to 3.00 pm.

Entry by donation.

Ride around the course at your leisure.

Bring a picnic lunch if you wish and enjoy the views and company.

Check the Vulcaniser event page for general info.

To see the most relevant weather forecast, visit http://www.metservice.com/rural/canterbury-plains and click on Waipara.  At this stage they are predicting rain to hit the area around 6 pm, well after we would have packed up and left.

How to get there

The course is at Mt Vulcan Station. Head north from Christchurch. Turn right off SH1 into Reeces Rd (by the school) at Omihi about 10km north of the Waipara junction. Travel up this road for 11km to where you will be directed up a white gravel farm road to the parking area (approx. 3km).  HINT: The house numbers on rural roads are the distance they are from the start of the road.  So 1096 Reeces Rd means it is 10.96km from the start.  The farm road is NOT SUITABLE for cars with low ground clearance. There may be a walk or bike of 700m of relatively easy gradient 4WD track to the course  if the access road is slippery on the day.   If the road is still slippery, just park where you get to and walk/ride the rest of the way. Allow approx. 1hr 15min from the north edge of Christchurch.

Because it is not a race, you might prefer to do laps of Mick’s Block (the right hand loop) and then do laps of the Boars Nest (the left hand loop) to save climbing up to the saddle each time. Both loops should be ridden in a clockwise direction.

There are some fantastic limestone rocks at the top of the hill in the Boars Nest which you may enjoy exploring on foot.  If the grass was shorter they would be fun to play on with your bike.
